Yes, thanks. TBH, the architect is calling it a variation, but I wasn't sure I agreed. I wonder is there any case law on this?

That was another thing. He got the cheap stuff. I told him to put in what was specified. He wasn't happy. I did offer him to give me 2k and I would accept the other stuff as I felt bad about him losing the money on the other stuff and having to wait for the Kooltherm but I think he thought I...

Thanks others as well. Didn't see your messages before posting, I think I answered in that message.

Thanks Doggit, Ill give one problem as an example. In the attic, I have 90 mm collar joists, with 100 mm between joist insulation. The datasheet says that if the roof space is usable (I have also asked for a loft hatch, so there was not doubt it was intended to be usable) the insulation should...

Hi, I am having some work done, and am getting charged for variations when I am not sure I should be. An example is insulation. Kingspan Koolthem was specified, and there is some aspects of this installation that are not being done as per the manufactures recommendations in the datasheet for...

Cutting windows into uneven brick courses

OK, thanks Woody. Confirmed what I thought, that the trim was a bad idea.

Cutting windows into uneven brick courses

Hi, My brick courses are out by around 25mm/m horizontally. Bricks are poor quality imperial. What is the best way to minimise the visual impact of this. My builder is suggesting a plastic trim around the windows (aluminium windows). I am thinking it might be better to just cut into the...

    Fibre cement boards, not asbestos

http://www.diyasbestostesting.co.uk Good luck. Mine was 1930s which was always going to be lower risk. Worth a go though given the costs.

    Fibre cement boards, not asbestos

They require a very small sample, they specified about the size of a 20p piece. It was possible to break this off without creating too much dust. I was also surprised that it could be posted, they just said to double wrap it in freezer bags.

    Fibre cement boards, not asbestos

It was about 25 pounds. It was a ACAS (?) accredited lab. Sampling is easy and results came back very quickly. I have still not had the materiel removed , so not sure easily this will be accepted by waste carriers. I think they would prefer one that was sampled by a lab, which would costs...

Foundations, Soil Surveys and Structural Engineers

I am doing a new build, and the architect has asked for quotes for soil surveys and engineers. The quotes are coming back at around 3k and 4k. The site has an existing building which will be demolished. The soil is aluvium (clay, silt, sand and gravel) to 10-15 meters, then chalk. There is a...

    Fibre cement boards, not asbestos

I had some fibre cement boards tested and they were negative for asbestos. Does anyone know of a skip company will accept the certificate I got (via email) from the testing company. I took the samples myself and posted them off so I would forgive any skip company who was a little sceptical...

    Subsidence

Thanks again Woody. I had a read about the Uretek system, looks great, I wonder how it would work with the weak gable wall though, perhaps it could be done if that was sorted first.

    Subsidence

I got the survey. There are two main problems. One is that the subfloor is failing due probably to bad fill. They engineers view is that it should be dug out and replaced with a suspended floor. The other problem is that the flank wall below floor level is bowing as it is not strong enough...

    Subsidence

Thanks for the responses. I am going to try and get a copy of the previous report. The other thing about this is that an attempt was made to rectify problems previously, and that's the reason the insurance aren't paying out now, which makes it more concerning. To clarify, the internal...

    Subsidence

Hi, I am considering buying a 1979 house with subsidence and wanted some advice to see if it worth pursuing and paying for a SE report. The left hand gable wall is bulging and there is a vertical crack in this. The centre of the bulging seems to be below floor level and the vertical crack ends...
