Emergency help please - got a leak

OK Rab, will do. It's only a sight seep so hopefully that'll work :giggle: I'm generally a pretty handy guy, but if there's one thing I've learned in all my years, it is that if I look sideways at ANYTHING concerning plumbing, there will be a flood. It's my Achilles' Heel. By the way, I went...

Emergency help please - got a leak

...and indeed I have slight seepage where indicated. I know it's not straight - never has been, since before my time (possibly since 1994, when the house was built), but the bottom grey pipe is fixed in place, as far as I can tell. I don't like to try and force anything, as I have a tendency to...

Emergency help please - got a leak

OK, going for it now. How long do you have to let it dry before testing for leaks please? Ah OK, read the instructions Roger - seems I don't have to. Well, it doesn't seem to be leaking  Of course, everything else (downstream) may be...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Ah, sadly my McAlpine unit, from the cheap'n'nasty collection, doesn't have that facility. Unless you tell me different, but it just looks like a one-piece plastic moulding...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Ah OK, those are pretty much what I have. It's not that I'm trying to over-tighten it, but everything's so tight under the sink that I can only turn it a few mm each time, then try to approach form a different angle etc, and then the jaws slip off, chewing the nut. Full disclosure - before...

Emergency help please - got a leak

What do you call that wrench thing with the right-angled end which is used to tighten the big nut round the waste from the bottom? I've only got those kind of pliers with adjustable jaws, and it's very awkward to get at, so they're chewing the hexagon faces of the nut

Emergency help please - got a leak

Thanks both  We'll see how it goes when the new waste unit arrives... e-ven-tually, as Manuel put it in Fawlty Towers....

Emergency help please - got a leak

So... I found Plumber's Mait difficult to use last time, as far as I can remember (not very far at my age, sadly), but I still have the tub. Consistency seemed a bit stiff, so it was hard to spread I think...? Anyway, when putting it (eg) between the top of the waste unit and the basin, do you...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Well, I ordered the item you suggested from Victorian - bit of a nightmare as their site wouldn't take my order no matter what I did, but a lovely lady sorted it out for me by phone. I plan to encapsulate the unit in silicon, shove it into the hole, then hit it with a hammer  Living here...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Right... by "top one" do you mean the thin one that's on the top surface of the basin?

Emergency help please - got a leak

Thanks - I seem to remember you helping me with the old one, years ago :giggle: no matter what you suggested, I tried it (Plumber's Mait etc), but it still wouldn't seal, so I used silicon. So I'm interested to read on the Victorian Plumbing web link you sent me "When installing we recommend...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Spoke too soon as usual - now leaking from the seal between the basin and drain. I remember tearing my hair out on here 5 or 6 years ago when I fitted a new tap and drain to this sink, as I couldn't get it to seal. I'm no plumber, but a normal human being should be able to tighten a simple...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Aye trouble is, people like me don't know that (I do now ) - I imagine those pipes have been like that since the house was built in 1994, so you kind of assume things are all OK  All reassembled now with a new bit of pipe, isolating valve etc. Seems OK so far. On the up side...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Well, soaked up as much water as I could (some has already soaked into the chipboard cabinet - don't know how long the leak's been there FFS), and everything shut down for the night. SF in the morning for some 15mm pipe, and hope I can lash it all up again. Chances of getting a plumber this...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Thanks - yeah, already did that. But I think it's the hot one - just to be sure, can you confirm that the left pipe on a mixer is going to be the hot one please?

Emergency help please - got a leak

Yeah... thanks, I'd already turned them off, but the tiny spray just kept coming... soaking the place out of all proportion to its size. It has now finally stopped - I guess it must just have been the head above it, up to the tap. So the bathroom cabinet beneath the sink is probably ruined, but...

Emergency help please - got a leak

Just found the bathroom floor wet, and there seems to be a pinhole leak in one of the risers to the handbasin. My mind isn't at its best under pressure, so... is the left hand pipe normally the hot one to the mixer tap? It feels slightly warm, but the hot water hasn't been on today. So I...

    How to clean flags

Last year I spent a day pressure washing my paths, made of concrete flags, which were dark and slippery. It did a great job, but 5 minutes later (OK, a few weeks) they were as if I hadn't bothered. I've read through every thread I can find, and the popular answer seems to be bleach, which is...

    Fitting gauge to oil tank?

Aye quite right, but this is a young mother, and realistically, unless I can make it REALLY easy (like a gauge), I'll be down bleeding the oil line again in a couple of months :cautious:

    Fitting gauge to oil tank?

Thanks Andrew - well, I managed to get a refund for the gauge, but this is a charity job so I don't fancy lashing out on an expensive unit. I'll buy her a big long bamboo! There's a non-working Watchman on eBay for a few quid, and part of me thinks maybe take a chance on it just being the...
