There must be a better way! (Washing machine woes)

Thanks Flameport. I'll look again at the fitting. I don't usually use tape - an act of desperation :(

There must be a better way! (Washing machine woes)

I hope you guys can help. Whatever I do I can't get the inlet hose of my washing machine to properly attach to the inlet pipe! I have tried exceptionally hard to get it as straight as possible, but it always leaks. I have bought a brand new hose, same problem. I've tried plumbers tape, which has...

Beat the leak – am I missing a trick?

I’m plagued by things subtly leaking. Can anyone give me some suggestions about how to fix my two most recent problems? 1.. When the plumber put in our vanity unit he very slightly cut the pipe going from the cistern to the bowl too short. It seems long enough at first glance, but you realise...

    Help! Weird chemical smell

Can anyone suggest an explanation to a mystery? Over the last few days I’ve gone downstairs into the backroom and smelt what I can only describe as chlorine, or at least a ‘swimming pool’ smell. It’s not exactly that, but it’s the best way to describe it. I find it a bit strong and my chest...

Top tip if your home is damaged by water or other accident

Hi Andy, I didn't know that, and you're much more qualified than I. Sometimes good advice is actually bad advice. I'll wait until you've seen this and then take down the post. I don't want to lead anyone astray.

Top tip if your home is damaged by water or other accident

Most certainly if you claim. But getting an assessor in is free and won't effect your premium if you don't claim (which you're not obliged to do). NB - Freecycle is free and environmentally friendly. Some things in life are free, you've just got to look closely. :)

Top tip if your home is damaged by water or other accident

Hi All, Thanks to this forum I managed to identify how badly damaged my kitchen was from my washing machine leaking. I was fairly convinced that I could fix it myself and was all set to go when my work colleague suggested that I might be covered by my insurance. I doubted it because the...

    Already set cement drying times

Yet again, extremely helpful John. I will take on your advise wholeheartedly. I've been reading up on this subject a lot now thanks to your pointers, so I think the horrible truth is that I'll just have to be patient - not one of my strong points. Many thanks!

    Already set cement drying times

Thanks for replying. :D I've tried but I can't get the pics to upload properly. I think it's an issue with my computer issue not the forum. I've been very unlucky with my kitchen plumbing, first the w/m discharge tube started leaking, which I fixed. Then I noticed that it was dripping from the...

    Already set cement drying times

My kitchen floor is cement and has been slowly being soaked by water due to a leaking washing machine. After some great advice from the forum I thought I'd dry it out then lay the vinyl as suggested. I thought I had successfully dried it out using my halogen heater pointing at that area for...

    Argh! Frustrated by indecision!

Yes, the leak was long term and very small. Basically there was no vinyl under the washer and when it leaked in ran down to the floorboard and soaked into it, rotted it away, and then the water kept going down the hole. Do you think I should just dry everything out, replace the floor board and...

    Argh! Frustrated by indecision!

This is a quick question which I’m sure will be swiftly answered by anyone who is not as clueless as I am. The scenario is thus: My washing machine has saturated the concrete floor in my kitchen and rotted away a floorboard that was next to the concrete. I have removed the washer and I’m...

    A very suspicious mark

Thanks for responding! Good point! I will try the chalk trick. I have a device that checks for pipes behind walls, I'll see if it goes off if I run it over the floor. Wood about 80cm into the room (I suspect the original boundary of the house) then it's solid concrete. The floorboard that...

    A very suspicious mark

Hi All, I hope I can get some advice? I’ve just chucked away my washer AND dishwasher for a variety of sins, one of which is stealth flooding of my kitchen. I say ‘stealth’ because it was a slow drip behind the machines so I didn’t see the damage for a long time. Also, one of my floorboard has...
