    From what I can remember of the top of my head! I think the depth for swa cable to be buried is 450mm (45cm). If you can get a copy of BS7671 (Wiring Requirements) I am pretty sure you will find your answer within.

    I suggest that you check out Part P building regs before you even attempt this. In simple terms - where there is the possibility of water (bathroom, kitchen, garden etc.) you need to hold a Part P certification to do the work. You would become liable for all work done & if an accident occurred...

    Diversity

    Quite possibly you could manage the circuit with 4mm2 but wiring regs (although not statuary) recommend 10mm2. See BS 7671 (requirements for electrical installation) for more details.

    Certainly in up to date building regs it frowns upon cabling in cavity walls and as such they must follow joists etc. However, prior to the amendments which occur with building regs it was a common practice to try and hide all cables this way. Could be that you are in an old house where this was...
