Cables in Cavities?

I have just discovered that all of the PVC cables connected to my CU run in what looks like a section of clay drainpipe in the wall cavity up to the floor above where they emerge into the floor void. In addition, a length of SWA is also in the cavity alongside the clay pipe. I have always considered that it is not good practice to run cables in the cavity between walls. Is this correct?

Certainly in up to date building regs it frowns upon cabling in cavity walls and as such they must follow joists etc. However, prior to the amendments which occur with building regs it was a common practice to try and hide all cables this way. Could be that you are in an old house where this was the norm!
