Which joist hanger type and exactly where does it go?

Hi everyone, I'm going to be doing a loft conversion soon. I'm in very early stages, chatted with a Structural Engineer briefly. He's had a quick look at my plans and made a suggestion about the structure and costs. I'm now beginning to finalise my drawings which I'm going to send to him again...

Advice and thoughts for a loft conversion (Lots of pics attached)

Ok, headroom isn't an issue. There's plenty of headroom. I'll measure it next time I go up there, but it's got to be 3m or so. I think the consensus is to get an SE involved. The problem I have is that I want to do this cheaply. New RSJs cost a fortune. I can find second hand 5m ones cheaply but...

Advice and thoughts for a loft conversion (Lots of pics attached)

I still don't know what you mean about the 4x3 beam, I can't think of where the beam could go. I'll have a think. I thought the joist hangers would go off the wall plate. I understand about the dwarf wall. I want to remove the purlins because they are too high up. I can't remember the exact...

Advice and thoughts for a loft conversion (Lots of pics attached)

Thanks! I want to avoid steel because it's really expensive, and I can't do it myself either as it needs expensive equipment, crane, etc and several people. I'd prefer to use timber as I can actually work with it. I'm not sure about the height, I'd have to chamfer the new joists I think. I do...

Advice and thoughts for a loft conversion (Lots of pics attached)

Hi Everyone! I'd posted about this last year, and now it's the time to start planning it properly. What are your ideas on how you'd tackle this? This is what I want to do: I want a livable space and I want to remove the purlins. I want to fit a few windows, preferably dormers. The stair case...

    Confusing Contactors!

Ok, yes, it seems that 2 pole will do. So 2 NC, 2 NO but I still don't understand where the other two terminals would go. Ok, and well earth, I might just join them together permanently. Here's the spec document: http://pdf.schneider-electric.nu/files/partnumbers/CAD32U7_document.pdf It...

    Confusing Contactors!

No worries... To start with, my office is a small brick and block, modern outhouse building. It has a SWA cable which runs underground to the shed (the shed is also my solar power house), where it is plugged into the mains. The office has it's own consumer unit. Here is the current setup: In...

    Confusing Contactors!

Yes, I was planning on having an earth switch. The reason being is that the solar stuff is in a seperate building with it's own earth. Is this wrong? The alternative is to join both earths together permantly - which I could do. Should I? The equipment should be fine too. Although without...

    Confusing Contactors!

I know it can power it because I have a 1kw solar system with a 450ah battery bank, including a 2.5kw inverter! The office contains nothing more than a 7w router and a 250w PC including monitors, etc. It can definitely power it! To add to this, the solar has been powering this for a few months...

    Confusing Contactors!

Hi everyone! I need a contactor/relay but I'm really stuck! This is my situation: I have a solar inverter, mains, and my office. I want both the solar and mains to power the office (but ofcourse not at the same time). I want the contactor to do the following: If the solar inverter is...

You're right! I have no idea where that number came from. It's a value I written down ages ago when I bought the blocks. You have the correct value and the correct U-Value.

    Outbuilding/Offie/Workshop Insulation Query

    Thanks Endecotp, These are my calulations: Thermal blocks: L = 0.022W/mK, Thickness = 0.11m, R = 5W/m^K. EPS: L = 0.038W/mK, Thickness = 0.05m, R = 1.316W/m^K. Plasteboard: L = 0.19W/mK, Thickness = 0.013, R = 0.066W/m^K. Combined R = 6.382. U-Value = 0.157. But I can't get my head around...

    Outbuilding/Offie/Workshop Insulation Query

Hi Everyone! I'm building my own block building in the back garden. Everything is going well up to now - Well apart from my OSB roof getting wet today in the rain. I've covered it over with tarpaulin now. My query is; I made the building from Quinn Lite B5 blocks (single leaf) and I want it to...
