Lighting circuit - Wiring for upgradeabilty - Smart home

I'm currently rewiring a house and it's being done under LABC notification as its not financially viable to go and do inspection & test, then become a member of a scheme etc etc to self cert just for one job. Electrics / electronics aren't new to me. I've done several domestic rewires over the...

Call out to a melted fuse box

Looking where the crack runs, it looks like the immersion cord has been too fat for the FCU, and like conny says its broken its back when it's been tightened up, or got hot. Some fuses when continuously operating near their limit seem to prematurely age and fail, despite not actually being...

Best way to patch up hole in the paster

As 1John says, if you lever and pick at it it'll just keep coming off. And off ....and off. If you lever it off the action will weaken and disturb the next piece along. Some how you've got to stop the rot, unless you want to replaster the whole wall. Here's my technique for fixing this kind...

    Pitched roof bracing

It's great to see a decent set of pictures for once. As a non-roofer may I stick my two penneth into this one. The 'purlins' to my mind serve little purpose. Probably their main purpose, as freddymercurystwin says, is to hold the rafters a fixed distance apart. Similar to the noggins between...

Help with an alarm obsessed boy's project please!

Did anybody go the 'windscreen wiper motor, pulleys and string attached to the curtains to open and close them' route? Which caused enough vibration in the walls for next door to question their plumbing?

Help with an alarm obsessed boy's project please!

@RigidRaider "I have just installed an evacuated tube solar panel on the roof but he's barely interested in that at all." A lot of people still dismiss solar energy in the UK but its well worth looking at. The PV stuff is coming along but using solar to heat water has been very viable for a...

Help with an alarm obsessed boy's project please!

RigidRaider, I can't tell you about the Texecom Exodus 4 wire sensor, but .......I can tell you about the Apollo integrated base sounder, as I've just started to read up on Apollo stuff for an alarm installation. Although you don't say which range the Apollo sensor is from, it IS one of the...

What the... ? Corroding copper pipes - pinholes.

Peruse, I'd agree with that too. The nature of the problem would suggest that even copper in the system that has yet to fail, but exposed to the same conditions, would also need to be carefully inspected. To attempt minor repairs may be a false economy.

What the... ? Corroding copper pipes - pinholes.

Whilst reading up about Stainless steel in plumbing I came across this which mentions pinholing in copper in a wider study: http://www.bssa.org.uk/cms/File/BSSA%20PLUMBING%20P.1-4.pdf I'll copy the document's pertinent text below in case the original moves or disappears..... USE IN...
