Earth funnies and phantom voltages on lighting circuit

In this case we know it's fairly common, so perfectly reasonable to anticipate that such changes are likely. Sadly, we know it's all to common for corner cutting clueless ****wit idiots to do just that. It's one thing if they just don't connect the CPC - then it's possible (if you can find all...

    Floor Joists Question

Me too, I 'kin hate the solid floors in our house (and the large slabs of weetabix too). Not least because the kitchen floor is solid and unheated so is always cold. If anyone tells you a concrete slab won't be cold because it's insulated - they are either lying or ignorant. Think about it...

Earth funnies and phantom voltages on lighting circuit

Back then, the building trade was a wild west when it came to electrical work - with anyone who thought they knew one end of a screwdriver from the other doing the electrical work. Kitchen fitters had the worst reputation for that. The result was the changes to building regs in 2005 making most...

Cutting and hanging internal doors a DIY job?

Well you can do it with a workmate - but it's 'kin 'ard work. Doing the sides is passable, but the door wobbles a lot unless you clamp it so tight it risks marking the door. Doing the top & bottom means clamping the side of the door, with the workmate cockled over and working high up in the air.

Cutting and hanging internal doors a DIY job?

Yes it can be a DIY job, and you don't need a lot of tools - of course, there's an element of it depending on your skills and tools to hand. I only do the rebates (hinges & latch) with a chisel. And I only use a hand plane - plus a circular saw and guide rail to take the bulk off first. The last...

Internet speed - WiFi v wired.

My first broadband was 512k, which we thought was brilliant - especially being always on and leaving the phone usable. Those were they days ! My first (borrowed) modem was 1200/75.

Wireless room stat/programmer with multi-channel receiver option ?

As a stopgap measure, in some rooms I have Salus RT510RF stats which I've paired with two receivers - one receiver in the room controlling a thermo-hydraulic actuator on the radiator, the other in the cylinder cupboard to switch the pump*. Eventually the plan is to hardwire everything as I...

Heat Pumps and Zones (or not?)

Let me translate that ... So a drop-in replacement, you just might need to upgrade one or two items - such as rads and pipework, otherwise known as "the entire system" !

Floorboard choice - reflooring bedroom & bathroom

Thanks, yes a very good video, but a key difference - see below. It's a wall that's sat on the floor - if I take the entire floor out, the wall falls down, if I do the floor in very short sections, it's harder to make a decent job of fixing up the butchered battens. But the key thing I think...

Floorboard choice - reflooring bedroom & bathroom

I know this has been asked before - and I've read some of the answers which seem to come down to : * Make sure boards have been kiln dried & acclimatise for at least a couple of weeks. * Little difference between redwood and whitewood pine. * T&G red/whitewood boards -> ply -> OSB or chipboard...

Mains motor for split shaft tools ?

Our old Stihl strimmer has packed in, and the local dealer says it's too old to get parts for ("it probably has a "Made in W Germany sticker somewhere on it" the mechanic said) - but I'll look into that another time. So it thought, the split shaft tools I inherited has a strimmer - but the...

    3rd Party Part-P Certification Schemes?

Why ? If it's a one off, just notify, pay the fee, and send in your certificate/test results. My experience is that LABC are only interested in having a piece of paper that's a) plausible, abd b) has someone's sugnature on it. This paper is to cover their backsides.

    EICR Faults

How do you come to that conclusion ? One reason for not giving out the previous report is to prevent "copy & paste" testing. And adding "something" does not automatically mean the installation (I assume that's what you mean by "it") has to comply with current regs - that depends on what was added.

    "Stubby" key Euro cylinder

I know we can do that ... if we remember. Having taken some cylinders apart for a look, there's no fundamental reason they have to be as they are - other than "that's how we've always done it"

    "Stubby" key Euro cylinder

A while ago, while looking for something else, I came across a video on Youtube where someone was making a big deal of selling euro cylinders with "stubby" keys that can be left in without stopping the other side of the lock being used. so you can leave a key in the inside without locking anyone...

What sort of earthing do I have?

Err, so what does the lever on the front do ? It will exercise at least parts of the mechanism. Assuming these work, there is very little left to go wrong.

What sort of earthing do I have?

As I wrote in post 25 above, MCBs have very little to go wrong, while RCDs have much more to go wrong. These days we tend to consider them "reliable", but I suspect they were far less so back when the regs were written. Plus, you need overcurrent protection anyway because the RCD does nothing...
