    helicopter crash

Amazing, these brave people were inventing new disciplines. It reminds me of when they first brought compulsory seat belts into cars, so many said that it would stop them "leaping out" away from an accident! It seems so obvious now.

    Glass bottomed boat

I can just lift it on my own so just assume it to be about 75lbs, that seems a fair estimate of my strength, it is plate, comes up to my chin and is crystal clear, it will easily be strong enough to resist the water pressure on a 3 foot deep boat. I must have got the dimensions wrong, as it would...

    Glass bottomed boat

The plate glass weighs 70 lbs, not a huge amount, and stabilising at the lowest level, I have a piece of 7 ply I am just fitting it in to now, and will fix that to the boat, lots of waterproofing, gaskets mastic and varnish.

    helicopter crash

I flew Sea King Search and Rescue for 25 years, and never had more than minor problems, a friend was in three serious crashes and decided to leave early. When it goes wrong there are some big forces to hurt you, but there are techniques to mitigate them, even the dreaded tail rotor failure...

    Glass bottomed boat

I sail in a very sheltered bay, the Findhorn, never a wave bigger than 1 foot, and the seals swim under the dinghy as we go, I would love to see more than their heads poking out to look at us. It is a lovely piece of glass, and big enough that I can cover up a lot of it to ensure...

    Waterwheel!

Nein, ich bein ein Englander but nevertheless I very much like the idea of plastic paddles, light, strong, rust proof, easily cut and joined, straight, unlike corrugated oil drums, can be bolted on tabs, and changed for new. The power is low, it is the last of three wheels on the same...

    Waterwheel!

I am actually building a fish farm, see my www.aquaponics.me.uk and will use the water power to pump water, mix fish food and extrude it through dies. It is an 11th Century watermill, but I just cannot market flour or rolled oats, its hard work and poorly paid, so its fish production for me...

Tenement Flat Scotland - major refurb (near original state)

Shame! There are some stunning fibreglass replacements that are so much better at heat conservation, but it might open up the bathroom for a shower, who really uses baths nowadays?

Hitachimad -I acknowledge your reservations, but the trampoline frames are amazingly strong, galvanized and perfectly circular, I will attach them with strong spokes to a very solid axle I have. I think this sort of thing should be a branch of engineering, re-using items for a totally different...

    University fees...

A bit of prior planning always helps, if you had arranged to be Scottish it is all free, cushy up here. Seriously though, invest in yourself, it is the best investment you will ever make, and if you will not, why should others?

    helicopter crash

Perhaps trying to keep visual with the ground in poor weather, and did not see the rapidly rising Mourne mountains. How the other half live, and die.

    Will not take water

Try it on a hot wash, maybe its just the cold supply bunged up. Check the pipe taps are on, ie spigot in line with the pipe. Check the filter where the pipe meets the machine. Check flow while the pipe is off, you may need a bit of ptfe tape to put it back again.

Tenement Flat Scotland - major refurb (near original state)

If it is a cast iron bath the enamel will have worn away in that acidic water, I don't rate in situ re-enamelling at all, it always looks bad. Sledgehammer and a fibreglass replacement.

Yep, its been said before, maybe too much time and an overactive imagination.

    tyrolean in tyneside?

You could have a go yourself, the hand cranked machine is quite cheap, and the snowcrete is easily mixed. You might have to go over the whole wall to blend it in, pleasant enough job for the easily pleased.

    Price of glass

Try going down to the recycling centre, or put a wanted ad in the free paper, for secondary glazing units, they are thin, safety glass and very cheap, as they are custom made, so of little use to anybody else. I am sure they will be easily secured in a plywood partition, with a vent put in the...

    Glass bottomed boat

I have a slab of 1.5in thick glass, 5' x 3', and want to put it in a punt, so that I can view the submerged wildlife in safety and comfort. It has a 45 degree edge, so should plumb in with a bit of mastic, all I need is the punt. Any insights?

    Waterwheel!

Ah, the groundwork is all done, digger put away, and the axle supports have been built, luckily at 8' centre, so a sheet of ply would cut well into paddles, but my plan is that the paddles hold the structure together, not too sure that a wood/metal mix would work as well as all metal. I really...

    Waterwheel!

I can get an unlimited amount of pallets, I suppose I could weld tabs to the rims and screw the slats on, then paint them, But I really like the oil drum option, and think I can get a whole load of them too. Grind the tops off, leaving the rim on one edge, weld the other ends together and...

    Waterwheel!

Many thanks Deluks, very good indeed. It has to be metal because even elm wood deteriorates quickly here in N Scotland, the wood gets saturated, swells and the frost works away at the grain, metal is the future, and it can be bent to an efficient shape easily. My problem is that the...
