Is de-sludging or de-scaling an operation I could do myself? If so how do I go about it?

Hi, I have a Worcester Heatslave Highflow 3.5 combination boiler. It is about 12 or 13 years old and seems to work ok (hot water could be a bit hotter). My problem is when the boiler is heating hot water (ie when running a tap) it makes a continuous groaning and sometimes screaming noise...
