    'Normally flammable' surfaces

Ready to be shot down in flames again. Was at a DIY shop the other day, and decided it would be nice to replace the lights in the bathroom. Checked that the light fitting selected was suitable for the position, it was over 1m away from the shower cubicle in the ceiling, so 'safe zone 3' was...

Wiring problem, I think the CU has them wrong

Yup! These are switches from www.homeeasy.eu. Basic internals of the switches as far as I can determine are a step-down transformer, diode rectifiers, RF receiver, and electronic variac Don't work properly has two stages. 1) the things get warm, this is what I am concerned about, only...

Wiring problem, I think the CU has them wrong

Thanks spark, I thought the earth was connected when I replaced the switch, the earth was wired in the back-box, so I wired it in. When things started going wrong was when I investigated further to find that it wasn't connected the other end (on the diags I didn't make it clear, the top JB has...

Wiring problem, I think the CU has them wrong

Test meter as in AVO? If the earth hasn't been connected (and as it is AC you can't test for positive and negative), there is nothing I can test against is there? Or do I just use a handy radiator as the earth/neutral lead (hoping that the infinite resistance of the AVO is infinite today)? Gareth

Wiring problem, I think the CU has them wrong

I must admit I have not opened up the consumer unit, which would possibly answer this very quickly. I have a lighting circuit, which only provides 3 lights (I hope) in an extension of a house, which was built around 10 years ago. The three switches in this extension have been replaced with...

    Electric Shower CCT

I guess that Spark123 is correct, however, my first reading and assumption was that the cord should be out of reach, so that if someone were being electrocuted in the shower, and for some reason the RCD did not trip (and a pig flew past the window, because at some stage something should give up)...

Energy Saving Lights, Flickering When Turned Off

Why does the heating being on make a difference? Or is it just that the 'savings' are actually due to the heating not having been used as much in coincidence?

Shower electric feed, and junction box

Shrewd question. I /personally/ would not want to route any cables so that they go closer to the bath. On that wall there is a shower, and the plumbing to the bath and taps. If these were to leak (in the same way that I had last weekend, a pipe rotted through and started leaking in the...

Shower electric feed, and junction box

    >> It isn't good working practice but unaccessible junction boxes seem all too common in the real world, you wouldn't be the first or the last to do it. Ok, thank you. Then I think that leaves me with two workable solutions. 1) Get the electrician in immediately to replace the cable from...

Shower electric feed, and junction box

Thanks, finding a socket will be difficult, there are none within 2m of the wall that the radiator is on (the other side), and all of these traverse the hall and doors. I shall think on this further as to where I could possibly position one. My immediate concern though, is whether it would...

    Electric Shower CCT

I am a layman but, I read somewhere today, a quick 'shortening and clarification' of the regulations to be (most sites that I have read today concur with the following): If a pull cord dual pole isolator can be installed in the same room, but out of reach of the person using the shower...

Best way to recess plug sockets?

Neat, can the tool also be used to deepen an existing hole. The backboxes in this house are all 16mm, I am installing some new switches, which although they fit in the 16mm, they are too tight if the bodger before left the fixing screw head too far out.

Speculation, changing a single ring main across two floors,

I don't particularly want to touch the consumer unit myself, so I would probably get an electrician in, and get them to check that the rest is up-to-spec' at the same time (I would not be able to confirm this, looking at it, it is the same size as I would use (6mm) and it mostly just looks...

Speculation, changing a single ring main across two floors,

Thanks, Finding one in the middle of the ring might be the difficult part. It also might cause the ring to be one front, one back, depeding on who/how the wiring was done, is this an issue (I guess not really, anyone sensible would check the socket first right??)? So it shouldn't be...

Speculation, changing a single ring main across two floors,

Hi, This needs a lot of speculation and guess work, but, you lot would know a lot better than I. The house is a 3 bed Semi, two floors, 1 loft. How much access would be required to change the wiring so that the current single ring main, was replaced by two, one per floor. Why? When...

Shower electric feed, and junction box

Ok, my bad definitely for somehow doing the sums and ending up around a quarter of the value I should have had. I don't know how. I am reasonably competent with electrics, DIY etc. (although those of you reading this will probably not agree with this, I was being stupid today). I do not want...
