    From my position of heating and plumping ignorance it seems arguable that the control box is in one of the three acceptable positions as it sits on the topside of the pump. It's just that the whole unit is upside down.

    Thanks for the replies. New information: So, hot water from the boiler is entering the cylinder but is cold on the return. Logic suggests that it isn't continuing through the cylinder coil else it would heat up the surrounding water. Or is my logic flawed and there's another explanation?
