Hello I've just realised that the demister mirror I bought to go above the bath is only suitable for Zone 2 and beyond. As I want it to go in Zone 1 is there anything I can do (other than put it elsewhere), or have I just made an expensive mistake? Thanks

Thanks, it was why I wondered about using an oil based primer. I tried to sand a water-based door and, like you say, it clogged up the sander. ‘Luckily’ it had old oil-based gloss underneath so a heat gun lifted all the layers. (Then I had to use 2 litres of meths to get the shellac off!)...

Out of interest, how do you strip water-based painted doors? I’m guessing a heat gun or paint stripper won’t do the job when the layers accumulate years down the line.

Yes, that was my first thought but I’ve read that the molecules in oil-based primers are smaller and penetrate the wood more deeply. I’m still committed to water-based top coat and see the point of keeping it all the same, but am wondering if an oil-based primer would offer a more durable base.

Thanks Scally-Ho, I'll give it a go. Has it worn through on your banisters? I've read that skin oil wears down water-based paint (which has happened on mine), and you should use an alkyd paint (back to oil based then). Or maybe just resign myself to painting the handrail more regularly.

One more question please. If you’re painting over water-based paint with more water-based paint, but with several years in between, I assume you sugar soap first and give it a light sand to key it. But do you undercoat again? Thanks

Thanks - so sounds like it’s a trade off between yellowing, which I don’t get with the Aquaguard water-based, and having hard wearing doors. Annoyingly it’s where there’s least light and most traffic. Maybe I’ll try Aquaguard Durable or the Leyland Trade. If anyone has tried both I’d be...
