    Thanks guys. I need to give it up as a bad job day- 1hr job taken 4hrs, 2 trips yo Screwfix and still not sorted! May be a fault with meter....can't change it til tomorrow. many thanks for all the advice today

    yes, have tried the meter with the block of 3 reds, paired with each of the blacks, with light switch on/off, but getting no bleeps. meter reads OL but does not change when probes touch wires

    ok I did that and tested with the continuity meter, but none of the blacks beeped when paired with red

    Sorry to check again. when you say power off- did you mean at the main power/fuses, or tye switch on the wall? I'm assuming it is the latter, as no power= no beep on multimeter?

    Great. getting a multimeter now. will test the blacks to see which beeps as the live switch and connect that to live with red. then the 3 other blocks into the neutral. correct?

    So with a multimeter, I couod determine which is neutral and which is the switch live....but dies that mean the switch live goes into live, neutral to neutral and the other two into a connector to tie off?

    yes two light fittings in the room, they both come on off the same light switch

    there are 3 reds going into the connector block, plus 1 'open' red. There are 4 open black wires. I have a connector block, but not sure whether I can just 'tie off' 3 of the black wires in it?

    Hoping someone can advise on this please. I'm replacing two ceiling light fixtures in a loft bedroom. The first was easy- 3 wires, live, neutral, earth. The second is not! It has a few wires already 'tied off on strip connectors, but has 4 neutral black wires. I can't recall how they went...
