Looks like it should work but if it doesn't beep when the probes are touched together then something must be wrong with it.

Thanks guys. I need to give it up as a bad job day- 1hr job taken 4hrs, 2 trips yo Screwfix and still not sorted! May be a fault with meter....can't change it til tomorrow. many thanks for all the advice today

Are the red and black plugs in properly? Sometimes the insulated sleeves get hooked up.

No I don't have the same problem, Seen lots of exactly the same one though, just look back on this forum,
And yes, I have any number of testers.
