    Rusted Lintel

O I wasn't drilling when this happened I was driving in remedial wall ties, you pre drill holes and then use hammer only to drive the ties in. I was clueless until I came inside at the end of the day and found a brick in my hall way!

    Rusted Lintel

Yes it is ex council, some of the brickwork is shocking! I installed new wall ties recently and one tie went into a half brick of the inner leaf that was completely loose in there and the hammer action of the SDS sent the brick straight through the plaster!

    Rusted Lintel

I guess taking a few bricks out is the only real way to know for sure, I was just curious if there was a way of working it out somehow. All the videos on YouTube seem to use the same type. The house is brick on both inner and outer with a 60mm cavity

    Rusted Lintel

Thanks for the replies. I pulled a pretty big chunk of rust from the joint. You can just about see it in there, I didn't rake this out it was falling out. Wall ties have also failed on the same wall. You can just about see it here, I'd dint remove this mortar it crumbled out.

    Rusted Lintel

Hi Recently found through a post on here that seemed to end up in an argument and got closed that my wall ties are failing which I've now resolved with helical ties. I also spotted the lintel is rusting and has blown the mortar joint. This lintel spans a window of about 2.2 meters. I've...

    Repointing advice

Your advice is very much appreciated, really glad I posted on here now as I think this has been caught before things got a lot worse! I do need some help with the lintel if you don't mind. Ive watched quite a few videos where a angle iron type lintel was used for the replacement with a cavity...

    Repointing advice

Things have moved on a bit since my last post, I've confirmed lime mortar was used and it's been repointed with cement at some point along with every other house in the street. After a bit of reading up on wall ties I hired a metal detector and found several, ground out the joint and found a...

    Repointing advice

Thanks for all for all of the feedback, it seems I have stumbled onto a brick laying mine field?! I'm none the wiser . The house has clearly been somewhat repointed in the past but it doesn't look like they went very deep, when I look over the joints there is a distinct difference between what...

    Repointing advice

Thanks for the advice much appreciated, so you think I will need lime in my mortar? I wasn't sure if I would or not. How come no like below the dpc? Is that for extra strength? Here are a few more pics of various cracks or joints which are falling apart

    Repointing advice

Hi I bought the house I've been renting for years towards the end of last year. The entire house needs a repoint but I'm keen on doing it myself in sections. I believe I would just need a 4:1 mix, do I need to add anything else? Below the dpc are a few joints that have gone completely...

What is this sealant around my double glazing?

Thank you for all of your advice, I'll get some of that stuff ordered. I did find one site that sells it with a diagram showing where it's applied and it looked just like what I have. What horrible stuff it is, it took a out 35 mins to cut through and it's left marks everywhere and all under my...

What is this sealant around my double glazing?

Yeah so I've removed the two panes which are fun xed with black tape around the edges. All of the other windows have a rubber gasket on the inside but this one was stuck to the frame with that horrible black crap

What is this sealant around my double glazing?

Hi Sorry if I'm not making this clear. Here is a picture of the glass I removed with the remnants of sealant and also where I've removed it from.

What is this sealant around my double glazing?

This might get ve a better view, it looks like a tape of some sort. If it is a rubber seal any idea what it's called, I've googled gaskets etc but not sure if it's the right stuff.

What is this sealant around my double glazing?

Hi I am.in the middlemod replacing my uPVC door and had to remove the glass from the side window to remove the fixings between the door and side window. We do want to eventually replace the windows too but not just yet. When I removed the glass I had to cut through this horrible thick black...

    Replacing security light

Thanks both for the replies. Here is a picture , I hit the switch on one of those on the left which I assumed were RCD's and confirmed the plug that the light is wired to was no longer working. When I cut the cable (or hit the switch on the left labelled central heating) the black switch on the...
