Circular retaining brick edging on a slope

It's a 'canvas' membrane over the soil to stop weeds (it's been there for 3 years since we bought the refurbed house). We would just top up the soil that's underneath What you are implying is that; if the new bricks weren't visually inline with the bricks of the wall, it might look odd - it's...

Circular retaining brick edging on a slope

I want to create brick circular edging to fill a small area with soil for planting out. Please see the photo. I am trying to figure out if just using one tier of bricks that follow the slope of the ground would look OK ? My initial thought was that the bricks should be brought level giving a...

    gloves to prevent saw cut

Whist sawing some wood I managed to cut my finger (on the hand holding the wood down). It was an A&E visit and I am now nervous about doing it again even though it was a one-off accident. Can anyone recommend a type of glove that might protect or effectively limit damage against this. I did some...

    Push flush valve identification

Hi Can anybody please recognize the make of the push flush valve shown in the image please ? It's developed a very small leak into the pan - after just two years in a new toilet. I removed and reversed the seal (which looked clean and good) but it has made no difference. I now want to replace...

    Fence gravel boards

Thanks Odds, it was my first attempt at fencing and I am just glad it's better than what we had. The materials cost £200 so I think I have saved about £400 :)

    floor tile layout advice please

Avoiding "skinny little rips" was how I was thinking too. The problem is, that is exactly what I will have at the near side edge ie the edge going under the metal strip. With the grout spaces, there will be about a 2cm over-hang :(

    floor tile layout advice please

I shall be tiling the porch area as shown in the photo. I have arranged some key tiles in a symmetrical layout but I wanted to confirm that this is the 'correct' pattern. It's not clear from the photo, but the the total width of the tiles would add up to five with cuts on the left and right...

    adhesive shelf life ?

A builder left a large container of PVA (with about 90% remaining) at our house after he'd finished a job back in 2004. I am still using the PVA in 2024. It works fine for sealing and concrete jobs. With respect to my original post, my theory is that the piston at the bottom of the tube is not...

    adhesive shelf life ?

I just wondered what happens to the adhesive after 1 year ? If the container is air tight, then I would have thought the adhesive would last several years at the very least. Afterall, when I use actually apply the adhesive I expect it to last for decades not just 1 year !

    adhesive shelf life ?

I have noticed that all tube-contained adhesives such as No Nails etc all have a shelf life of only 12 months, regardless of the technology of the product ie hybrid polymer, solvent or water based. Yesterday, I bought a tube of a similar product from a big DIY chain and I was shocked to see that...

    Fence gravel boards

Hi Wayners, thanks for the reply. Once I'd googled H posts I realized how they would be a great solution. However, as I'd said, I'm stuck with some old concrete posts that will also have the problem of not having a whole number of equally spaced feather boards :(

    Fence gravel boards

I am doing something unusual. My neighbour has the “good side” of an existing driveway fence using old concrete posts. I cannot get at his side of the fence as there is a hedge. My plan is to completely construct a new fence on the existing posts but line them with wood. My fence and the old...

    Fence gravel boards

I shall be constructing a 1.2 metre high feather board fence soon. Do the feather boards sit on the gravel board with the gravel board taking their weight or do the nails bear all the weight with the gravel board merely making it look neat ? The reason I ask is because when I walk around looking...

UPVC around a wooden door ?

It looked identical to internal door architrave - 40mm x 6mm size. You are correct, it doesn't actually need architrave, that's what happened to be there. It needs to be of a certain thickness to conceal the gap between the door and the jamb What is the best/proper way to attach the UPVC to the...

UPVC around a wooden door ?

We had a rotting external side-entrance door that was visible from the road. I have stained and polyurethaned a replacement door to match our rosewood UPVC windows and it looks fine (smugly happy) I have removed the old wood side architraves and the front facing wood trims. I was going to...

    Plumbing lecturer

The pension scheme was excellent then became very good and now in it's third incarnation which I would describe as "better than most" For each year you work, you receive 1/57th (one fifty seventh) of your salary. This will cost you about 8% of your salary. So if you were on £35,000, it would be...
