Sealing off tumble dryer vent hole

I’m wanting to replace vented dryer with heat pump so vent will be obsolete. Is it ok to put a piece of ply over the internal hole and just leave the grill over the external side? Think that’s as much as we could do as DIY

    Oily marks tumble dryer

Dryer leaving oil type marks on light weight clothing. Domestic and General have been out twice and haven’t fixed it. Would I be as well buying a new dryer?
