Best Pipe Lagging to avoid sub- zero stop-tap water Freezing

I see a concrete floor. That won't freeze.

Best Pipe Lagging to avoid sub- zero stop-tap water Freezing

If it gets to -10° outside, you could have a problem,. but not at zero , I think. Put a wee pot of water down there as an indicator. Or a thermometer! Remember the floor won't get anything like as cold as the air outside, so any sort of cover over the lot like a cardboard box would probably do...

    Cold rads

Shut the radiators which work, that should get water round the others. You may have airlocks. Three floor houses can be porcine to balance. what's your system exactly. More than one pump??

    Boiler powerful enough?

Water's going straight back to the boiler perhaps, then. find the first couple of radiators from the boiler/pump, and shut them. See if the rest get hotter. It's often the first one, like a towel rail in a bathroom, too far open. Rads only need a dribble of water. Does the Hot Water get too hot...

    Difficult pump change

Slipped on the stairs, can't stay on feet, so it will have to wait a bit, When you haven't done something for years, all the little things which used to be at hand, aren't any more. I want a wet vac ready. I took out the Wickes one I used to use a lot, turned it on and smoke came out. Undid a...

    Difficult pump change

Posted a version of this earlier. Yes I know people will be quick to say it shouldn't be like that, but the engineer who did it estimated it would last a long time. It did. He thought he'd move house.... He didn't. The by-pass has always been closed (15mm twisty one in the pic), and grey is a...

    Difficult pump change

Ah right, . I have one somewhere, used once to cut a tile out. Never seen it since. Mine was a Bosch from B&Q, about £30, 20 years ago. What colour are their boxes??!!

    Difficult pump change

Thanks all If I could "alter pipework" I could access the pump. There's about 3 inches from that rear 22mm comp nut to the brick wall, and a 15mm Tee already in it. Those are 2ft/600 from where you are at the front of the cylinder. You probably could Mottie, or I could have done 30 years ago...

Boiler not turning off now won’t turn on without HW

Those spindles do only turn about 20°. Like less than 10 minutes on a clock face. Assuming what's wrong is that the motorised valve has stopped working (you may be able to replace the motor inside, in due course) With the side lever on the motorised valve head you can latch (against the spring)...

    Difficult pump change

That was a thought but it's not very appealing. The cyl would also be a pig to get out. There's nowhere to put it - it's in a multi purpose room which is full. And we'd lose HW for the duration. I'm old/arthritic/fibromyalgia (which I used to think was al in the mind) so it would take me...

    Difficult pump change

I have to try to change a pump which is hard to access. I mentioned it in another thread, it's behind a HW cyl where it's lurked for 42 years I got a crowfoot spanner on the nearer pump nut (2 1/16th inch) but of course the pump started to turn. I don't think I could manipulate two of them (I...

    Non sealed-system combis?

Yeah, not too bovvered though. It takes me quarter of an hour to get me togs off these days so I'll be in sync. The pump's against the outside wall... I can't get to the screws on the pump to take the head off, and it's a Myson Unit3, I don't know if anything would fit. I managed to reach in...

    Non sealed-system combis?

The cyl is in the way of doing anything. It's in a tight brick airing cupboard. The pump could go higher up the wall, once removed. The idiot who put it in in the first place could have done that. Hey ho. See? Yes that's a pump spanner but it won't go on a nut: wrong angle. Because I didn't...

    Non sealed-system combis?

Trying to achieve some heatth Well, it's a Y plan with a Netaheat IIF 10/16. The pump has failed, after 42 years. I'm considering options. The boiler could stay until Summer - decisions to be made. I have a set of spares for the boiler but it's had its day, like me. Lack of access means the...

    Non sealed-system combis?

Are there any combis for about 35kW HW which aren't sealed? I have to get a boiler replaced where I'm not confident the pipework wouldn't weep at 3+ bar. (I know there's a compression joint under a tiled floor, and I remember the pipe up to the towel rail rotating in it, in the past.) I'm...

    Mosaic Trowel

I've just done some mosaic. I used a sawtooth edged trowel so there are no big holes and ordinary adhesive and narrow gap grout . Grouting was only a little fiddly. I used a foam one with a rubber face, about 4 inch by 9, no difficulties. I did use my finger here and there, as normal! It...
