    Time to replace?

Reminds me of those crumbling service cables into houses, only protected by an 800 amp sub-station fuse, not exactly valid protection!

    New Oven and hob???

the manual says fuse protection minimum 25A fuse for the oven and grill. would the cable go CU---> cooker switch----> hob ---->Oven ??

    Replacing an Electric shower

You not only need to consider the cable size, but also the fuse/contact breaker protecting the fuse. 8.5KW is about 37amps (at 230V). What is the fuse size in the shower circuit?

    Cable size outdoor LED flood

That size flexible cable can carry up to 6A, so no fuse needed from a 6A UK lighting circuit to protect the cable. 6A is approx 1500 Watts so, as said, overkill for the 60Watt load. Thinner cable might need a smaller fused supply (e.g. Plug fuse or from a fused final connection unit).

    Room Stat

If it is on a lighting circuit (we don't know) there would be no FCU. Anyway the fuse in any FCU is to protect the cable, not the boiler which will have its own internal fuse. The cable is rated at more than 3 amps so the fuse can be as well.

Everything has to be 13 Amp??!!

You also said: Which has no relevance: The fuse is to protect the cable, not the appliance. I have no interest in the link anyway, I was simply making clear that yes, smaller flex sizes can have 13A fuses.

    extension lead

Hello The fuse is in place mainly to protect the cable from over heating, upgrading the fuse could cause the cable to overheat if the appliances draw to much current. Unusual to find an extension with a 5 amp fuse though? Be best to buy a extension rated with a 13amp fuse to be on the...

    Appliance fuses

bhm1712, I have it firmly in my head that fuses in plugs protect cables not the item supplied. In a kettle there is only one protection, the fuse. The old push out the plug protection I believe is rarely fitted in kettles these days - the lift off kettles that sit on a plinth.

    Cable leaving house to underground.

    1. All cables must have fuse (etc.) protection. 2. If the cable is good enough. It is preferable NOT to have an RCD for SWA.

    installation of new cooker

Yes, but you never even considered the size of the cable before saying "aye". The fuse is there to protect the cable from over current.

    Built in oven

no. But there may be a way around . . . 30 amp cable? specific size in mm² ? What is protecting this cable at the fuse box / consumer unit?

Wiring remote switched sockets for Kitchen appliances

To be clear, when supplying an appliance via a FCU + flex outlet, the FCU is doing the job of a fused plug, and should be sized according to the power of the appliance. The fixed cable on the load side of the FCU is also protected by that FCU, but depending on the size of that cable, may be...

Location of new sockets / cabling technique

What you can do is to run the cable from the existing socket, through the wall to a fused connection unit incorporating a 13 amp fuse and from that fused connection unit you can then put your two new sockets in as the 13 amp fuse will protect the cables and two new sockets. BUT As both...

Branch off Henley block after meter with swa cable to outbuilding

Hi all, I have a cabin in my back garden that I'd like to supply power to. I'm planning on branching off from a Henley block in my main household meter cupboard and using 15-20 metres of 16mm2 3 core swa cable to go to another consumer unit in the outbuilding. I was planning on putting a...

    Disconnection time formula?

A 13A fuse will adequately protect a cable whose CCC (as installed/used) is no less than 13A. The CCC of 1.25mm² cable coiled up on a reel is a lot less than 13A, so a 13A fuse will not necessarily protect it against melting. I really don't see how the calculations you appear to want to do...

    reusing a disused shower circuit

I dont understand the 'problem' here surely the cable must be protected by the 'fuse', at the end of the cable a couple of FCU with fuses rated at 5A & 3A would be spot on, as long as the RCD is there somewhere and the cable will fit into terminals of of the FCU's. Am I missing something?

Hoover Fridge Freezer - 14 months old, completely stopped working

Does it have an internal fuse? The plug fuse is just there to protect the cable. My own fridge/freezer has another fuse at the connector block where the cable enters the casing (back bottom corner). Not the same make/model as yours but worth a look.

10amp flat 3 pin Italian plug with 13amp UK plug

I can't say that I am familiar with Italian plugs ,but if it is rated to 10A & fuseless, then presumably the cable is the same & a 10A fuse should be fitted to the adaptor

Moving this away from a thread

Too many things being lumped together. Fuses etc. are for protecting the cables, not appliances.

    Am i within 'the law'

The point is that if you've used a 13A fuse because there is a heater, the lighting cable is then not adequately protected.
