    Cooker Wiring

The fuse is more than 20A, indeed there is potential for the hob alone to take more than this. Given this fact, would you recommend NOT using 2.5mm cable, even for the 13A spur?

Fuse rating required for fluorescent fittings?

The fuse is there to protect the cable - not what you put on the end of it.

    10 Amp fused plug missing

That assumes the cable is able to carry 13 amps for a prolonged period. It is not un-common to use the fuse on the plug to protect the internal wiring of the appliance from overheating when there is a fault.

    Spur query

Hi, it depends on the fuse that is protecting the cabling, are you saying that the socket is on a fused spur ? Regards, DS

Does this cable need an FCU?

I am hoping to finally to get round to replacing the alarm later this week. I have decided on a wired one now due to cost. The existing control box is in the hall but I want to move it to the electricity cupboard and use a remote keypad. There is a 1.0mm flex cable coming from the consumer...

Emergency Light in Electric Cupboard - advice

The fuse is to protect the cable, not the appliance on the end of it, so it depends on what cable you are using.

Do I need a fused spur

Hi, Found this forum courtesy of Google. The wife wants a tumble drier, but she's decided there's not enough room in the house so it will have to go in the garage. The garage is supplied from the house by what I assume is a spur, (can only see one cable coming into the garage). The cable...

    96W TV, 10amp fuse?

It's nothing to do with the TV. It will have fuses inside where/if necessary. The fuse protects the cable and long as the cable is rated at more than 10A then it is alright.

    Theoretical question regarding ratings..

The big fuse at the electricity sub station is one protection. Though in some countries there may be a fuse for the supply cable where the cable leaves the distribution pole.

    Cable rating for lighting circuit?

The size of the cable that you can use depends on the size of fuse that is protecting the cable. It is not related to the size of load, or if the wires can fit in the holes. So.. next question: what size is the fuse protecting that circuit? It may be too big for 0.75mm² conductors.

    Exterior 35w light

Fused Connector Unit - the cable is the spur. The fuse is not necessary on a lighting circuit but would be for the protection of the spur; not the main circuit.

    Discussion Of The Week!

in a standard domestic install the tails should always be sized to take the FLC of the main fuse since with a fuseboard / CU installed it's perfectly possible to draw the full current of the fuse. (ie it's not a single fixed load, it's variable ) in a busbar chamber connected to a switchfuse...

2 Amp round pin plug wired to trailing socket?

Wil you please stop this crap. A fuse is a protective device and one does not have to restrict their designs to the basic or minimum standards listed in the regulations.

    Bathroom extractor fan keeps dying

...are guidance only and are often wrong anyway. In this case IEE regulations is wrong. The IEE has not existed for many years. As regards a fuse, the fuse is to protect the cable not the fan. Cable small enough to require 3 amp protection is not legal to use so a 3 amp fuse is not required.
