replacing bathroom light with 4 downlights

Hanging bathroom light!! That's worrying in its-self. It's actually not just a case of routing cable for 4 lots of lights from a junction box. For a start the junction box needs to be accessible in case of maintenence. It also depends on the type of lights you opt for. Some low voltage...

Lawn mower burst into flames. Residual protection?

Slippy - Can you explain please? Surely the fire and break in the circuit would have caused an imbalance tripping the RCD?

Lawn mower burst into flames. Residual protection?

No but at least it would have tripped the RCD bit to ensure no electrocution. My concern was that had it happened to my wife she may have stuck her fingers near the damaged cable after the small flames had put themselves out.

Lawn mower burst into flames. Residual protection?

Okay so that was probably an exaggeration. I've told myself a millions times .... don't exaggerate. On Sunday I was mowing the lawn when the cable entering the handle burst into flames. On checking it would appear that a cable snapped at a point where it was constantly being moved. On...

    Light circuit with no earth

Thanks ebee. I disagree with BAS. How many people do you know that check continuity of the CPC when they change a light fitting? How many people would know how to? How many people would even know what it was? There also seems to be some confusion that MrB is doing work that he shouldn't...

    Light circuit with no earth

PDC - Are you forgetting that Mr B has bought the house in good faith and is after all just fitting a lamp or changing a switch cover?

    Light circuit with no earth

Thanks for that guys now lets get practical. Mr A owns said house. Mr B then buys said house from Mr A unaware that the lighting circuit isn't earthed and has no reason to check it. A number of scenarios could occur - Mr B decides to fit chrome switches and being unaware of a main earth...

    16mm tails need replacing

Okay guys 100A Henley blcok at the ready and guess what......? The seal is already broken. The plot thickens though. On closer inspection the tails from the meter to the existing Henley block appear to be 16mm. Is it still advisable to upgrade the tails from the block to the CU to 25mm...

    Light circuit with no earth

Is a lighting circuit with no earth anywhere deemed legal? I have a house where there is an entire lighting circuit with no earth connection apparent anywhere. Apart from re-wiring the whole circuit which is not practical at this stage what would your advice be? Some of the circuit is...

    16mm tails need replacing

Guys See the attached picture. The Henley block you see has the main tails going in from the meter and then two old 16mm tails coming out from the block to the CU. Unless I'm mistaken to comply with regs these tails now have to be 25mm. (TNS system) 25mm will not fit into the load side of the...

Ceiling Rose Disaster - Please Help

This sounds like a Buster Keaton movie. Simple solution and explanation. Switch off power to the lighting circuit. It sounds like you have 3 cables each with a red (normally live), black (normally neutral) and Yellow and green (earth). Assuming you have a standard ceiling rose with two...

    Problems with socket circuits

Yup spark Tell me about it. I didn't fit the box. I think I'll be recomnmending some changes. I don't remember the neutral being on the wrong side but I'll check. This would cause an imbalance in the RCD wouldn't it?

    Problems with socket circuits

Nothing has been done since last week. No drilling nailing or otherwise. I am going to try to get digi photos today but need to borrow a camera. The RCD trip indicates a break in the wiring or inbalance in current flow but I am getting continuity readings on both neutral and earth for that...

    Problems with socket circuits

Hi I am having problems with the socket circuits in a house. Can you guys tell me what is wrong? Scenario Wylex CU with the following set up left to right. (Forgetting a couple of unused MCBs in the mix) 100A Main switch - 16a Lights MCB - 32a Upstairs sockets - gap - 32a...

Harmonised and non-harmonised cable in same circuit?

I thought it was now against regs to use red/black? Are the e bay'ers hoarding it for Antiques Roadshow in 2085.

Burglar alarms - wired v's wireless

Guys I've been through numerous strings on the forum and are as confused as ever as to whether wireless alarms as good as wired. I don't normally do it and I don't want this to be a long laborious string but I have been asked to fit an alarm and want to give the best advice. Succinct...

    Earth Not required?

Under new regulations the bathroom is regarded as a 'special location'. The downlights contribute to a change in the circuit rather than just changing a light fitting. This means according to the book LABC need to be informed and they need to be tested by a 'competent person' and an...
