    DIY Thermoelectric Power

Thanks all for the tips. The fans I have are just CPU fans mounted on the wall behind and to the side of the stove. They just need a 12v input so I'm looking at a way of generating that power through something on the stove top. I don't want another fan on the top as I think the heat is better...

    DIY Thermoelectric Power

Thanks, yes the fan I have uses one of these although it is of course not mounted directly onto the stove. It sits between the base of the fan and the mounting for the motor, so it raised about 3" off the surface. I'll see if there are units for these.

    Phone-based mapping/route-finding.

I also use Google and Waze together, mainly before I leave work to go home. I'll check where traffic is building up and also check the motorway cameras (https://www.motorwaycameras.co.uk/england/m1/northbound) to see what junction to take if I'm going to use the M1. I actually never use a...

    DIY Thermoelectric Power

Yes the principle is the same as my current stove-mounted fan. I wanted to have a bank of fans mounted behind the stove, slightly off the wall so that air could be drawn up behind them (in the fireplace opening) and thrown forward into the room. I've seen the heat patches, but not idea how to...

    DIY Thermoelectric Power

I have a wood burner which I run with free timber (well, it’s a lot of labour but it doesn’t cost anything). I managed to salvage two CPU fans from work (see link showing similar item) and I’m planning on putting them behind the stove to push stagnant heat forwards. I have a stove-top fan and...

Lining a Shed - to breathe or not to breathe?

Yes boiled linseed oil is what I use! The smell makes me want a bag of chips every time I open it. It's up there in the realm of se*y smells such as steam traction engines and old oily diesels.

Lining a Shed - to breathe or not to breathe?

My shed is a similar size. I just put a few hit and miss vents in at either end. Far cheaper. All of my tools and machinery are in there and none develop rust. I have a much smaller shed just for garden tools and I coat these in oil before the winter every year. All nice and sharp.

No ID, No vote, No record...

This only affects a fraction of society anyway as only fraction bother to vote! Local elections were particularly poor recently here, with the highest turnout in the next village at 36% and the lowest at 12%. There is no secret ballot in the UK. Each voting card is logged with a number which...

What TV shows did you watch as a child/teen?

Wizadorra, Woof and Play Days if I was having a good day! Worst one was "The Wrigglers" because it terrified me.

Only a fool breaks the two second rule ...

I use the M1 every day and the biggest problems in terms of driving style are: Sitting in lane two, seemingly avoiding an empty lane one. Simply driving too fast to properly anticipate the situation further ahead, or the potential actions of another driver Driving too close to the rear end of...

    Outdoor Lights -- Timer

Interesting stuff, thank you for posting. I'm tempted by the one posted by @RandomGrinch. If the one I posted doesn't have a fuse then I'll steer clear of this. The Tapo switch you've mentioned does sound useful, but maybe not for us. The PIR is a good option, but as I say I like the control a...

    Outdoor Lights -- Timer

It is a good idea, but I like the control over the times and would prefer longer periods of being on.

    Outdoor Lights -- Timer

Thanks for that, yes I had considered this. It's a very valid argument. I've weighed it up quite a bit over the past month and decided to go for it. Rather than it staying on all night, maybe the best setting would be for the light to stay on until midnight-ish (a few hours after we go to bed)...

    Outdoor Lights -- Timer

I have some lights at the back of the house which offer a nice level of lighting for the patio. I like to keep them on overnight as a bit of a deterrent, because when they're off, it's pitch black and secluded at the back of the house where the patio doors are. I have been remembering to switch...

    E10 Fuel with Lead Replacement

Interesting stuff! Yes fuel sat in the tank for more than a month was on my mind, hence the post. There is a steel fuel line from the tank to the pump, thereafter it is hose to the modern carb which I think uses a plastic float (need to check that). As it happens it was Gates' hoses I used. I...

    E10 Fuel with Lead Replacement

Lot of misinformation out there so I had been led to believe E10 fuel has a considerably shorter life when stored outside in car tanks. Need to do a bit more reading. Assume given the material of the pipes delivering the fuel and the new carb, none of that will be affected.

    E10 Fuel with Lead Replacement

True but the stabiliser helps protect against the breakdown of E10 fuel, which is what I'm more interested in. The lead substitute just happens to come with it. I'm asking as although the car is used, there may be fuel in the tank which has been in there a month or more since the last top up.

    My Girls School

My secondary school was built in 1965 and by the time I started there in 2001 it had all sorts of issues. The flat roofs leaked all the time, some of the windows were hanging on to dear life (one actually fell off its hinges from the second floor), the paint was peeling on all facades, etc...

    E10 Fuel with Lead Replacement

I should have said, but it had them put in sometime after the car was brought out of a barn in 1994. I only found that out by chance speaking to an old owner of the car. I hadn't planned to do it though as the car doesn't do the mileage to warrant the work.
