    Lintel advice

Recently had my attached garage converted to habitable rooms, so the double skinned external wall between garage and lounge is now an internal wall. I have been considering sinking a large screen TV into the wall so that the front of the screen is flush with the wall. To do this I would...

    Gas pipe corrosion

Prior to having some building work done, I had a gas safe engineer to remove some lead gas pipe and replace with a copper pipe. This was approx 4 weeks ago. Yesterday my wife thought she could smell gas and when I checked, there was indeed a gas smell and hissing noise close to the meter. I...

    garage conversion question

Having just completed a garage conversion and studied various methods of raising the floor, I think in your case a option would be to lay compacted sand to level the floor as it will probably have a slope towards the door. Then lay a damp proof membrane, then cover with at least 75mm insulation...

    Clear or frosted glass?

Just having a garage conversion done. The garage has an existing rear window which is frosted, presumably to prevent anyone looking into the garage. I need to replace the window with a fire escape opening and have specified clear glass. The area at the rear of the garage will be a small utility...

    Notifiable or not?

As the garage conversion is well under way, I thought an update may be appropriate. After the floor was laid the building inspector paid his first visit. He observed the new consumer unit and asked who was doing the electrics. I advised him that the consumer unit had been installed tested and...

    Notifiable or not?

I think I have resolved my own query now. Having rechecked all the website info for my local building control, It seems I have paid a standard fee for a garage conversion, which includes notification of electrical and other work. I.e it is assumed that if a garage conversion is carried out then...

    Notifiable or not?

As the original poster, having read through all the replies, It seems that even the experts can't agree. I suppose at the end of the day it will be down to the local building inspector and how he interprets the rules. Thanks for all your replies.

    Notifiable or not?

I am having a garage conversion done soon and as part of the preliminary work, I have had the consumer unit replaced. All fully tested and certified! The cu is in the garage and currently I have one socket and one light fitting in the garage. These were connected to their own circuits in the...

I sometimes wonder why I bother asking questions on this forum when you get answers like that.

    Non protected circuits

Electrician fitted a new consumer unit for me. I had asked for 10 way as I needed 8, but thought a couple of spare ones may be useful in the future. The unit he fitted is a Wylex NHRS 10SSLH1 and is configured with two five way sections independently rcd protected. The remaining two are...

    Garage conversion timber frame front

I'm planning a garage conversion. Rather than the traditional brick and window frontage to fill the doorway, I wanted to use upvc cladding below the window to match other areas of the frontage. I thought that it would be necessary to build a block wall and then clad with upvc. However I wondered...

    Bathroom extractor problem.

Bathroom has a ceiling extractor fan, which is wired correctly with isolation switch outside bathroom, and cord pull on off switch in bathroom. The fan has overrun so has a permanent live connection. Everything works ok, but very occasionally when a light is switched on in another room, it...

    Garage conversion interior wall.

I'm in the early stages of planning a garage conversion. The existing garage is integral to the house and I propose to split the garage into two sections. The front will retain the existing garage door and will be used for storage as it is now. The rear half will be converted into a useable...

    Conservatory base.

I am planning to build a DIY kit conservatory using a steel base system the type that usually sits on concrete pads 45cm cubed. The area where the conservatory is to be sited already has a concrete patio approx 80 - 100mm thick. This is in very good condition, no cracks or signs of movement...

    Sime super 105 mk2 pressure.

Daughter moved into a house with a Sime super 105 mk2 boiler. she had to have some plastering work done, so I removed a radiator. Whilst I was there I checked the boiler and saw water pressure was almost zero. Not being familiar with the boiler I couldn't see where the filling loop was, so said...

There are only two settings on the pump marked III and II. Extract from the manual:- 8.4 Adjusting pump speed The unit is fitted with a two-speed pump. The pump is delivered with the switch (1) set to position III (Fig. 8.4.). Attention! Important note: The boiler should only be...

    Noisy system, pump speed?

Moved into a bungalow a few years ago which had a Vaillant Turbomax 824, which as a 24kw output. The system has always been noisy when it fires up, mainly pipework noises I think. Have asked service engineers about this but never got a solution. Whilst browsing the boiler manual I noticed it...

I need my bedroom kept at 20C whilst im on holiday!!! How??

You could convert your room stat to a wireless one. They are available on ebay for around £30. Then leave the portable half of the stat near the tank and set it at 20degrees. All other rads could then be turned down.

Salus RT500RF Programmable Room Stat Questions

I have been looking at buying a Salus programmable thermostat to replace a wired programmable thermostat, and came across this thread. After trawling through all the posts, it strikes me that many posters don't fully understand what a programmable thermostat is, regardless of whether it is...
