    Weep Vents

Fair point. However the mice are getting in from somewhere so I guess it can't harm to fill in the vents. If I still see them after that then I will investigate further.

    Weep Vents

Hi all, My house has weep vents a couple of inches above ground level every metre or so. Some of the vents have inserts, some do not have inserts and some of the vents have plastic inserts that have come halfway out which cannot be pushed back in. My question is whether I can retrofit...

Gap between plasterboard and breeze block at the loft

The house was built in 1996 so I'm surprised it wasn't better insulated & sealed. I have found a few areas that need to be tidied up such as where the toilet downpipe punches through the ceiling. Not sure if there's any insulation between the breeze block and external wall; if not I will get...

Gap between plasterboard and breeze block at the loft

There isn't a continuous dab of adhesive and the wall-board goes all the way into the loft. I noticed the gap when running cable from sockets in the wall up to the loft where they terminate at a switch. The gap was useful for feeding the cable through! There's no insulation of top of...

Gap between plasterboard and breeze block at the loft

Surely air-sealing is as important as insulation. There may not be much in the breeze block, but there is no point having an open gap between the plasterboard and the breeze block. Air from inside the house will find its way out through electrical sockets etc and into the roof space. Sid

Gap between plasterboard and breeze block at the loft

Hi All, My exterior walls have plasterboard dot & dabbed to breeze block, however the gap between the plasterboard and breeze block is open where it reaches the loft. This means that any heat in this gap escapes into the loft. This can't be good for insulation I'm guessing. Should this...

    Bespoke Loft Hatch

Hi, I need a replacement drop-down loft hatch and have decided to go for a bespoke one because I can't find a standard one that fits the hole in the ceiling. Can anyone recommend a bespoke loft hatch manufacturer in the London area? I have come across JupiterBlue but they are based in...

Cat 6 Cable : FTP vs UTP

Hi, Is there any benefit in going for FTP over UTP for a home installation? I don't think that any of my runs will be over 30m. Also, can anyone recommend a supplier near London that I can collect from? Many thanks, Sid

Home Network Patch Panel : How can they be mounted?

Yes, I can get at it comfortably. I wonder if it may be better off in the loft though. That way I could get a bigger cabinet and the cable would be easier to install. It's only the operating temperature of the electronics that's making me consider the above spot near the consumer unit.

Home Network Patch Panel : How can they be mounted?

Thanks for all the comments to date. I have a further question on where the 19" 220mm deep rack should be mounted. Is it OK to put it in the loft? It gets pretty cold up there as you might imagine and the operating temperatures of most switches that I've seen is 0C to 40C...

Home Network Patch Panel : How can they be mounted?

PoE sounds like a good idea. I was planning on installing CCTV eventually anyway. Is there anything in particular I need to know to run a PoE switch/router? I am planning on installing a Cat6 network. Do regular devices (PCs/consoles etc) need to have a filter between them and the...

Probably just for ethernet. Can you recommend a 12-port gigabit switch?

Home Network Patch Panel : How can they be mounted?

Hi, I'm looking to wire up my house with ethernet and have a 12-port patch panel in the cupboard under the stairs. I understand how the patch panel works but every patch panel that I've seen seems to be designed to fit into a rack of some sort. This seems a little overkill for a 12-port...

    BoilerMate III replacement

I have read that this is a valid strategy for dealing with a blocked feed pipe on the boilermates. My BM-II will probably require something similar one day. Personally I would go for it - you may get a few more years out of the BM-III While he's at it, why not have him look at whether the...
