Great. Here's a pic of the trap: It's a McAlpine trap. The outer diameter of the black waste pipe is 42mm; that makes it 1.5 inch, correct? Am I right in thinking that if I buy a McAlpine SC10V, it will just replace the lower section without having to alter any of the pipework...

Nah, I won't cut it if I have to bodge it - I'd rather live with an unsightly pipe run than a leaky one! It's only for a cloakroom washbasin, so unlikely to see much in the way of crud getting washed down it - but I take your point about the internal lip.

If the round to flat adapter isn't quite the right diameter to match up with the spigot on the hood, you might need to use soem adapters for joining lengths of round duct together to get a good fit. Toolstation and Screwfix sell them.
