2nd oil tank or a bigger oil tank

I use am outdoor double bunded kerosene oil tank and, because of oil prices, am looking to either: 1) Enlarge the existing oil tank 2) Get a second oil tank and connect to the outlet of the first Are there any restrictions for 2) e.g. copper pipe diameter upped to 15mm from 10mm due to...

Trunking cover over exposed bathroom light switch cable

There is a small gap between the switch cable hole and the cable itself.

Trunking cover over exposed bathroom light switch cable

A small bathroom has a small section of exposed 1.5mm2 electric cable running from a wall to the lightswitch (pic attached). I need to conceal this cable either by pushing it back into the plasterboard or fitting surface trunking over it and making a waterproof seal such that no moisture can...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Do mice/rats eat through electrical tape and waterproofing tape? I saw some partially chewed cables (in a different property years ago) due to rat damage

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Well the property has enough problems without adding risk of electric fires to it. The other cable had a fraction of of a mm shaved off about 1cm2 of the sheath on 1 side (didn't even go through the outer sheath) which is actually really hard to see except without being right up close. I...

Maintenance free junction box under floorboard

Thanks. is the 'Hylec Debox 4 pole junction box' classed as not maintenance free ie can only be used inside an access panel (e.g. 1 gang plate and backbox)?

Maintenance free junction box under floorboard

Are the Ashley J804 suitable for 1.5mm electric cables? I also have about 10 pre existing (ie signed off by electrician) of 'Essentials 30A 3-Terminal Heavy Duty Junction Box Black'...

Maintenance free junction box under floorboard

I'm 'making good' an existing electrical installation in a terrace alongside lowering the ground floor ceiling. As such with the electrics under the upstairs floorboards I am doing: -Clipping the electric cables to the joists at 50% depth as the electric cables were not clipped at all...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Image (2) is the 2.5mm2 cable nick turns out it was only through the outer sheath and did not go through the inner sheath no sign of exposed copper. Pic (filename ending ..535) I decided to wrap electrical tape around the cable, then put waterproof tape over that and then use cable ties to make...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

That's what I'm doing 1st thing tomorrow, and if there's no exposed copper I'll wrap tape around it and leave alone

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Probably the neutral copper as I can see (bear in mind the cut is literally 4mm across and less than 1 mm deep) a bit of blue. It's a tiny cut literally a glancing cut from a multi cutter not a full 'go through'

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Brilliant thanks. I will turn the B32 RCBO off, test the wire using a voltage tester then see if the wire is actually nicked (exposed copper) if the sheath is cut but the live/earth/neutral wires are not then I'll tape over it. If the live/earth/neutral is cut I will then relocate the socket...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

The copper is very likely exposed. Can I relocate the 2 gang socket down so it's 28cm from ground? Then no additional joints needed

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Can I move the socket down 8cm so it's 28cm from ground (is this ok and in accordance with UK regs)? If I can then I don't need to create another joint

    Accidental nick to socket cable

I don't know if the earth wire was nicked aswell Happy to move the socket down provided the socket can be 28cm from ground? From what I've read all electrical joints need to be accessible and this is best practice

    Accidental nick to socket cable

I have read that electricians don't like maintenance free joints as they can't see them so my plan of using 3 x 32A inline spring connectors inside a backbox covered by a 1 gang plate (which is accessible) seems to tick the boxes. This plan allows the joint to be accessed whilst using Wago...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

I would use an in line spring clamp connector (https://www.toolstation.com/wago-221-2-way-inline-lever-connectors/pAC293) with no heatshrink tubing (as it's not needed I just remove 1cm off sheath off line/earth/neutral. The 3 connectors would be inside a 1 gang accessible backbox covered by a 1...

    Accidental nick to socket cable

Is about 1cm bare copper on each end of the cable enough to fit into these wago in line connectors?
