Nissan Micra K12 - steering wheel locked, key not turning

Not unknown unfortunately, but first try squirting some WD40 down the key slot and then trying a spare key, waggling the wheel as usual as you try. I've fitted new locks to the K11 - that wasn't too bad - but the K12 has little access around the steering column. John :)

Hyundai 5-in-1 HYMT5200X - hedge trimmer not cutting through hedge….

From here it would seem that the branches are too large or the machine just isn't revving quick enough.......any comments there? Do the other attachments seem to be OK? John :)

Hyundai 5-in-1 HYMT5200X - hedge trimmer not cutting through hedge….

A point or two..... Do the blades actually stop when they bite on the hedge brash The blades must be very close to each other to give the cutting action......did you need to assemble these yourself? John :)

    Tractor mower deck

The sculpting of the deck will tend to throw the grass upwards towards the missing chute, but what you propose will work. With contra rotating blades, a side discharge isn't as successful. It may cover the transmission with grass though! John :)

    Trailer base material?

With further investigation I've found some 20mm ply has been used at some time, so I've gone for 25mm structural ply, 8x4, 3 sheets required. I'll bolt it down, then add the rubber sheets on top. It's only used for digger transport, at a guess a couple of tons or so. John :)

    Trailer base material?

As per the title, the trailer measures 3065 x 1710, four wheels and is used to transport a mini digger.......therefore pretty hefty! The original base is 20mm OSB with 12mm rubber conveyor belt on the top. The OSB is split / rotted etc. I'd like to go for 25mm OSB but no joy there (keeping the...

    Alternator Repair

Many replacement alternators don't come with a pulley fitted.......at least over here......hence my comment. Are you going to give it a bash? At that sort of age, the rest of the alternator should be in good nick - unless it's been to the moon of course! John :)

    Alternator Repair

Normal electronic cored solder is fine but you'll need an iron of 125W or more if you have to get stuck in. Personally I'd go for a guaranteed replacement unit, but do make sure that you can shift the pulley by yourself - particularly if it's a free wheeling one. John :)

    Brakes 51 Reg Ford Focus

I'd also be looking very carefully at the timing belt condition before giving this vehicle any work! John :)

    Brakes 51 Reg Ford Focus

Expect to have the discs and pads renewed all round, together with a fluid change and take things from there. The flexy hoses may be an issue, but not yet! John

    Tyre Rotation, any point?

As above - they need to be refitted if they are marked like that. This dictates the direction that the rubber was wound onto the tyre. In real life I doubt if there is any difference, but insurers may think differently if there is some issue. John :)

    Tractor mower issues

It seems what you are finding is fairly commonplace on garden tractors - that is, it's only the rear of the deck that is lifted. It's usually done by cable or lever. I would have thought that the U bolts could be adjusted to raise the deck height though, if only to prevent the deck from not...

How's your luck with Premium Bonds?

Heading for the shoe shine....... £125 this morning  John :)

    Tyre Rotation, any point?

Personally I don't bother.......on FWD vehicles I keep the best tyres on the front, maybe putting them on the back depending on wear. I don't mix up offside and near side. Balancing won't be affected, unless in a rare occasion the wheel is balanced on the hub. Camber wear shouldn't be evident...

Door hinge screws not secure, quick fix?

If it's not too bad, we used to plug the holes with matchsticks covered in PVA glue, let it dry and then replace the screws. John :)

Sure, the water gets in around the lamp units.....never seen a watertight seal yet! John :)

    Metal Storm Door Closer Stripped

Freddie is bang on with this......pop rivets can be used blind so just what you need! I'd go for 5mm diameter (officially 4.9mm but 5 is fine), around 10mm long or whatever. All you need is at Wickes or B&Q etc, and the spreader metal around 2mm thick. John :)

Just bought an old car any advice welcome.

It could be a good buy.......what is the MOT status? It's sure to need such items like discs and pads - nothing to worry about there. The Focus of this generation did tend to let water drain from the bonnet into the spark plug wells, so it's worth a look see there. Timing belt and auxiliary belt...

A3 rear calipers and hose replacement

A quality pipe spanner is a good move.......I have a Halfords Professional one, nice wall thickness etc. On difficult pipes I've used Mole grips if the spanner jaws had a tendency to spread. Curious - I thought these cars had a banjo bolt system on the rears! John :)

    Brake query

Yep, eventually there will be brake imbalance on one side, which will eventually show up on the MOT. The pads may wear unevenly too. John:)
