Thank you, Yes I did think that'd be the easy and sensible approach, but access is difficult between the tanks, so I was thinking that charging (and keeping charged) the pipe would be tricky. Also, the tanks do regularly run dry.

If it was mine I'd give it a quick sand with a belt sander or drill sander attachment, to get the worst of the loose varnish off, then use linseed oil on any exposed areas. It will look patchy, but it will protect the wood.

I'd recommend line finishing plaster - lime putty mixed with kiln dried sand. If the cracks are too fine for the sand, just use pure lime. On reflection, you could just as well use NHL lime, which is generally easier to get hold of
