    Installing Steel Conduit

Let's suppose you need to install a Ring Final in steel conduit. This would seem to involve a ring of steel conduit in which you might fit each piece of conduit by screwing it into the previous piece. The last piece would seem to need to be screwed into two female threads and unless one of them...

    Choosing an Extending Ladder

I have a 2-section aluminium extending ladder that extends to 7.5m. It has wheels to run it up the wall and a pull string to raise it, so it can all be done by one person with the ladder starting upright. However it has been stored in the garden too long and has reached end of life. I have been...

    Fun with an extractor fan

I was standing in my son's bedroom half an hour ago (I did all the wiring for it last year), when there was a bang which came from the en-suite extractor fan. It's a PIR type. So we isolated it and went closer. It was making a loud hissing sound, even though isolated. Ah, I said, an electrolytic...

Plasterboard on ceiling - which way round?

Just about to start fixing plasterboard to the ceiling, and was going to run it in the direction of the joists. The builder who built the extension happened to come round today and said it had to be the other way, with the length perpendicular to the joists. Can anyone tell me why this is the...

    Scheme members - notification

A question just occurred to me. Sorry if I get the jargon wrong. If a scheme member does some work which involves a submain plus a new CU, and let's say, fills in two EICs, (one for submain, one for CU etc) does this member have to pay the scheme twice to notify the two EICs?

    Test Procedures

I have been reading through Section 7 of Guidance Note 3, which roughly corresponds to Section 612 in BS 7671. I was trying to make some sense of the tests to see how logical it was. What I don't seem to be able to find, is any case of a measurement of continuity of a neutral in a radial...

    Wiring an oven :)

Silly question. I've just got as far as the downstairs wiring in our new extension, and deciding where to fit the accessories for the hob and two ovens. I have a full-height fitted unit for the two single ovens, but it's at the bottom of an enormous pile of cardboard boxes. In the experience...

    Singles in Conduit

A question to the electricians here. When wiring, using singles in conduit, is it common practice to use a reduced size cpc similar to the sizes in t&e, or is it more normal to use the same size as the live conductors? I realise that Zs has a bearing on this but I wonder if there are other...

    2382 question

I got this sample question wrong, and I'm not understanding the answer given. So can anyone explain how to get the right answer? If a short circuit occurs in a low voltage installaton between a Line conductor and the Neutral conductor, the voltage between the other line conductors and the...

    Door handle connecting rod measurement

I'm in Germany at the moment and we just saw a nice interior door handle set in a local DIY store. My only worry is whether the size of the square section connecting rod is the same here as in the UK. Is anyone in a position to measure one of these rods on a UK door, and let me know the...

    Pictures 'cause it's Friday

Guy sitting next to our CU at work yesterday complained it was buzzing. Determined it was one of the (fluorescent) lighting circuits (second from right in CU picture), and found it was carrying 6.3 A with a clamp meter, and has been doing so for the last 15 years. Received replacement MCB in...

    Concealed Walls

Is it just me, or is anyone else puzzled by the tick box item on the BS7671 standard form Schedule of Inspections, under 'Cables and Conductors', called 'Additional protection provided by 30mA RCD for cables in concealed walls.' :?

    6242Y Cable

Does anyone know the actual derivation of this number? I assumed it was a British Standard, but I think it's BS 6004 which actually defines t&e cable. And BSI don't seem to acknowledge BS 6264 except as a spec for medical specimen jars.

    Under the floorboards - 1963

About to put in a sub-main for my new extension, so I lifted some boards today. This is how it was done in those days apparently. The ring final goes off and back at this point to the immersion heater switch. I think I've got some work on my hands.

    Large metal accessory box?

I wonder if anyone has come across a metal accessory box, which is 4 gang wide by 2 gang high? (or similar?) I thought that something like that would be good to bring cables through to the back of a CU mounted over the box. If you see what I mean.
