    End of jury trials?

Lammy has been given him an idea that juries can be dispensed with in all but really serious cases. Seems like a politicians way of reducing delays in cases being heard, but could increase the prison population as magistrates tend to convict more often than juries. Also the political appointment...

    Spy trial collapses

The government's witness statement said there was a threat to national security but that was not enough for the CPS who decided to drop the case. Very odd given the case was years in the making.

    Torey conference outcomes

Couldn’t find a recent thread but Bad Enoch’s speech struck me as the longest Sui cide note in history after Kinnoch’s in 87. The only new thing was the promise to end stamp duty. That might buy her some time as leader but it will hardly prevent them from being all but wiped out at the next...

    Delete emails to save water

Storing emails uses energy in data storage centres, which create a great amount of heat which is treated by water. Deleting old emails will reduce the demand. Its remiscent of the advice to turn taps off when brushing your teeth. But what has meaningfully been done by the water authorities to...

    Sycamore tree

The two defendants have been found guilty and will doubtless get long prison sentences. Do we want to be filling up prisons because a tree has been cut down?

Government announces voting age will be reduced but is this naked political opportunism?

    Snail’s pace

A snail walks into a bar and orders a whisky and coke. “We don’t serve snails”, says the barman, and throws him out into the street. A week later the snail walks back into tne bar and says :”What the feck did you do that for?”

    Shoplifter escapes on Shoprider

Hilarious, especially as the policy seems to be that the police don't generally respond to shoplifting

Waitrose to bring back free coffee without the need to buy anything

I remember this first time round, everybody came for their free coffee, police, firefighters (I saw an engine parked up and 4 crew get out and claim their coffee) police, Council workers, all the utilities in their hi vis. It is amazing what people will do for a freebie.

The red Queen caught red handed

Allegedly. She asked civil servants to help her pack and move from her London flat to a grace and favour flat in Admiralty Arch. In breach, the Cons are saying, of the ministerial code. They helped cleaned the flat, but no mention of a party. Good on her I say but not a great look for Kieth.

    Best National Anthem

Apart from ours obviously. Just watching Casablanca, there's a scene with the French singing their national anthem in front of the Germans, and it made me think how rousing theirs is. But there are some that are just pretty shoite like the South American ones (written for dictators) and Italy...

    Farmers on the march

What do people think? Is it not fair for farmers to bear their share of IHT, especially those like Jezza and Lloyd Weber who got into it for lifestyle and investment.

    ten Hag sacked

Is it going to make a difference, the club will always be profitable, but does a bloke who made his fortune from the chemicals industry have a clue how to run a football club?

Last UK coal fired power station closes

I’m remember driving past Ratcliffe on Soar power station back in the day. And the 250 thousand tons of coal that was stored there. Was it wise to close it down (and the pits that supplied it) when the threat from Russsia etc could make home grown power essential in the future

Reform UK candidate who was sacked was actually dead

They sent several emails and left messages to him, and having heard nothing assumed he was ignoring them and publicly announced he had been dropped as a candidate. Tragic oversight or lack of any due process, reform said they were mortified, having previously dissed the candidate in a press...

    Lee Anderson defects to Reform

Sunak is driving out one of the red wall MP's that gave his party its majority in 2019. Surely a sign of the complete wipe out he faces at the next general election. 30p Lee will lose his seat but is assured of a good job on GB News.
