    How to rest a beam?

Legs-akimbo said: This statement is absolute nonsense and shows that you have never installed a steel beam, wheras I have installed many. The mortar mix must be just wet enough to hold together and it will support the weight of the beam. Let’s consider your 300lb beam, so that will be 150lbs...

Advise on Stepped Cavity Trays for Conservatories

You mean a conservatory added to an existing house wall? I don't think many people bother to fit cavity trays unless it's new build. It's a lot of chopping out of bricks.

    Plaster mix for wall?

That's interesting you say that Tex because I think the opposite. I've used one coat stuff but apart from being expensive I find it takes too long before you can float it. this would be a good point for the beginner to plastering surely? I personally like to cement render with a skim coat. The...

    New Building Regs

Summergirl read about it here Plugwash, I misunderstood then. I thought the amendment to BS7671 was going to be from Apr 1st 2006. You're saying it's already happened. How about if someone moves house after Apr 1st 2006 to a house wired in the old colours. They can only get cable in the new...

    New Building Regs

Ok, but if a diy person used the new colours in an existing house wired in the old colours what would they do about this? Quote from IEE site:

Summergirl Exactly, and it may be best to stock up with cable in the old colours then.

    Wiring Question - when finished

That's better B-A-S; I like the oval 'cos you can stick it to the wall with 'no nails' type stuff and don't need to chase the wall. I personally would use the one coat plaster to fill the chase.

    Wiring Question - when finished

That's for surface mounting though. Surely the best stuff for burying is the oval pvc? 20mm oval only measures 12mm over the narrow side.

    French Toilets

I thought the pan standard was 4" which is 101.6mm. A standard pan connector pushes on the french pan & goes into the 110mm soil pipe.

    Removing metal windows

Yeah ok, but just think that next week someone may do a search on removing metal frames and they may have some that are fixed to the brickwork. My comment about the frame jamming the disc cutter may be worth knowing.
