I've heard that ScrewFix and B&Q are related, is this true? I've placed several orders with ScrewFix and everything has been excellent with the exception of one item being out of stock.

    Making a hardwood stable door

Hi all I would like to make a hardwood stable door for an old stone barn that has been converted into an office. Both frame and door will be required, and, although the obvious (and easier) option is to get a joiner in, I'd really like to tackle this myself as I have done all the other...

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

Asked Jewson for a price and told them I will shop around. They said to let them know what other people are quoting. Hopefully means they'll reduce if others qoute lower :) A point of detail with regards to the ridge of the roof, should the boards and counter battens meet to a point at the...

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

I had realised the tiles were the wrong way round, but I'd already saved it and closed it by then - I might not fit the roof exactly to the diagram! We have a branch of Jewson about 3 miles away, are they good enough for the timber requirements? Should the 1" battens be tanalised? Cheers...

    Power to the office...

It's really more of a home office than a commerical enterprise. As for the wiring, it was all new when we bought the place a year ago.

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

Had a 'friend of a friend' surveyor come round this afternoon. Stone barn conversions are not his field of expertise, but he does recommend a breathable membrane for almost all exposed beam or 'cold' roofing jobs he advises on. He was happy that boards be used on top of the rafters, and...

    Power to the office...

Hi I am wanting to add 10 double sockets and 4 light points to a converted stone outbuilding that is to be used as an office. We currently have an RCD on the outside of the house that provides power to 2 sockets in the outbuilding, 1 internal light in the outbuilding and 1 external...

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

Intersting that you mention boarding on the rafters, somebody else suggested that. Somebody else suggested a breathable membrane as there will be no effective ventilation in place. Of course, I don't want condensation dripping onto the computers so it's something to bear in mind. I've put...

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about an architect, but, luckily, a local man has recently taken on a not disimalar project - his was a brick barn, so it had straight lines to lay a roof onto :) He has run through a few things with me, like treating good timbers and replacing bad...

    Replacement roof on stone outbuilding

Hi My mother in law has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness and we are trying to find her somewhere to live within a few miles of our house near Pickering in North Yorkshire. This is not proving very successful so far, so we are thinking about plan B. We have an old stone...
