    adding a dimmer switch (in-line)

Ok, good to know, thanks, I have found one rated 400w on Screwfix, so that should fit the job.

    adding a dimmer switch (in-line)

Perfect, thanks for this. I am pretty sure it is 6 lights, but now I am wondering if I have got that wrong and it isnt 8! So if 6 x 60w bulbs then I guess I might be a bit over..... will check the screwfix catalogue for one a bit beefier then. As I would be turning them down to about...

    adding a dimmer switch (in-line)

My feeling is yes, because they are basically standard rose fittings, with 60watt bulbs... I cant be sure, but I would expect they should be.

    adding a dimmer switch (in-line)

Hello all, I have an old industrial unit with a good (and well put in) fused switch, that used to control a ceiling fan..... but I have removed the ceiling fan, and attached lighting to it instead.... so the switch is a nice industrial type switch which simply controls the power to the...

Creating a Porch - opinions please

Hello all, I'm looking at putting a porch on the front of my 1900's semi detached, with full compliance from my next door neighbor, who will probably lend a hand as he would like a porch too..... so we'll do the foundations and basic structure of both sides at the same time, and then the rest...

Timber frame - cross section advice please?

I'm not sure how to best achieve that really. As before (with the moisture barrier added) this was the planned wall cross section: - 12mm OSB for the outer skin of the walls - breathable membrane - cellotex or similar between the timber - Moisture barrier - plasterboard Are you...

Timber frame - cross section advice please?

thanks guys, In reality this will be more than a summerhouse, my plan is for it to be a summerhouse/pub/additional spare room for when people stay over.... So whilst ply makes sense, it wouldnt give the right look/feel.... but I see your point about keeping it warm, perhaps if I am using...

Timber frame - cross section advice please?

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Another question but this time regarding insulation. I was going to use cellotex, but have seen some cheap 170mm rockwool. As the majority of the structure is in 3x2, that only really gives me about 70mm to put the insulation in...... what do we think...

Timber frame - cross section advice please?

Oh yes, of course, thanks! I've got plenty left over from the warm deck. Do you think OSB on the outside is overkill if I am going to clad it somehow anyway?

Timber frame - cross section advice please?

Hi all, I am building a timber frame summer house/garden room/bar, and wanted some advice on the make up of the walls please. So far I have made the shell out of a combination of 2x4 and 2x3, and have put a warm roof on.... so what I am left with is a skeleton structure. My thoughts on...

    warm roof/deck for garden room

NB - what thickness of Cellotex would you say was acceptable for the roof of such a garden room? As it is not a living area for a lot of the time (and I'll probably put a bar inside) and I'll just heat it when needed with the Portable Calor Gas Heaters .... and the fact that I have loads of 3...

    warm roof/deck for garden room

Thanks for this, As I have it already, then I will do exactly that and throw it over the joists before laying the insulation down on top. Regards,

    warm roof/deck for garden room

Thanks again Xenon. As I have a great big roll of the stuff, should I use some vapour barrier anyway? If it isnt overkill, where would you put it? Regards,

    warm roof/deck for garden room

Thanks Xenon, So just to be clear, you are saying to: - Lay the QuinnTherm/Cellotex directly onto the joists. - Tape edges of insulation together - Lay the OSB on top of insulation - Create enclosing edges around the outer edges of the insulation (with 3 x 2 probably as 70mm insulation...

    warm roof/deck for garden room

Hello all, I have put up the wood frame for my new garden room, and the roof joists are 6 x 2. I put a cold deck on my extension a few years back, and that was relatively easy, but this time think that warm deck would be the way to go this time on the garden room. However, I wondered if...

Vapour barrier over joists - garden room floor

True, I will be using QuinnTherm which is the same thing, so perhaps thats the way then..... not bother with the vapour barrier under the floor. NB - Any thoughts on how best to stop animals from getting under the 'raft'? I was thinking chicken wire or something.... How much around the...

Vapour barrier over joists - garden room floor

Actually forget my last post, of course the barrier will be above th. Insulation.....durrrr

Vapour barrier over joists - garden room floor

Thanks guys, Essentially because of the gradient of the land, there is loads of ventilation... I.e. One end is ground level and the other is 2.5 concrete blocks (layed flat) high. I totally agree that a barrier could be a bad thing, and with so much ventilation it's possibly unnecessary...

Vapour barrier over joists - garden room floor

Hi there all, I am building a garden room, and have created the 'raft' of timber joists. Some places I have researched say to put a vapour barrier over the timber, underneath the OSB that I am going to lay on top, some say not to bother. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Roof construction for Garden Room, but inside an existing

Hello all, I have decided to keep an old barn/shed structure in my garden, but essentially add to it.... albeit inside it. The outer structure (after ripping out the internal structure) has been found to be very robust, so I am not going to tear it down. The plan is to build the new...
