Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

The builder didn't take the news too well! He said "I'm going to fit padstones right away". We told him "You shouldn't because firstly the calcs are wrong so the bearing, and the RSJ could also be wrong". He ignored us and refitted the pads very, very quickly. We even said "you might have to do...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

You're right soldered can leak but there is more chance of the compression going first. In exactly the circumstances you said. And yes it is against regulation to use compression fittings on concealed joints on gas pipes. It's just bad practice to use them on water pipes. Bring us back to the...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Thats why he should solder the elbow while he has access, so there is no possible chance of leakage in the years to come. I have had to remove a few leaking service valves that have been installed on the flow/return systems after they were fitted 4 years before. He has arranged to call the...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Sagging, cracking all the same to a mere novice like me! The crack wasn't there before. On the previous post I mentioned the crack length, but the start of the crack is about 1mm fading to nothing. What do you think about the loads I have mentioned, I know it's a description and hard to...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Hi Noseall, To try and answer your questions.. The span is approximately 2.8m, the beams are bolted together, as for the load the RSJ is supporting the side of the house second floor plus the gable end of the roof. Do the dimensions of the beam sound right? You mention your beams are designed...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

It's wednesday night.. I went around to my mates house to look at the work so far. The builder plasterboarded up to the RSJ covering up all block/brick. The #1 RSJ is resting on 6" of block one side and 5" the other. #2 RSJ is resting on 10" one side and 5.5" the other. It is quite difficult...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Hope you're still watching! BCO was attending Wednesday! Builder has blown him off for another day, unsure when, maybe Thursday! Hmmmm!

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

So the BCO is/should be qualified to determine the padstone requirement. Wednesday is D-day, I'll let you know what happens. It looks like the builder/SE has used to bare minimun regarding regs, he overhung the RSJ 6" into the wall and 12" the otherside. I believe 8" or 9" is recommended...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Called my pal, and yes you're right with the dimensions. Also the blockwork overhung by 1/4" either side not what I said before. Does the Council engineer always check the dimensions or is it left that the SE knows what he is doing? How can I get the calcs rechecked? How do the BCO know what...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Another observation with the RSJ.. The RSJ that supported the block work(not the brick work) was thinner than the block work itself by about 1/2" to 1" both sides.

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Thanks both.. So Woody, with your last comment are the BCO qualified to check the maths on the calcs to determine whether an RSJ is required? Excuse my ingnorance, but are the BCO the Local Authority planning inspector?

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Addition to the note above. I understand about the calcs. Lets say a padstone was required as the load was too great. The padstone then sits on-top of the original pillar blockwork, surely that block can't take the load either. Do you know what I mean?

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Which is where the calculations come into it I suppose. The LA inspector is coming this wednesday. Is he qualified to judge whether the blocks are sufficient. As the SE is the builders pal. I know I appear very cynical, but the kitchen refit is high-end finish, and there are some cowboys out...

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

Hi Woody, Most houses are brick and block so when would you ever need to use a padstone?

Does a RSJ always require a padstone?

What is the latest regs for installing an RSJ. I had a knock-through last year, paid the SE for calcs, paid the builder to install, and paid the LA to pass it. Job done. I went to a friends house when their builder was installing the 2xRSJ on their knock-through. I noticed he had used an old...

Drilling a cast iron soil stack?

Sorry lads.... have you heard that the soil stack can be a minimum of 75mm internal(82mm external).. I have a JTL plumbing book that says you can. So to clarify.... can I reduce to 82mm soil pipe... then drill the cast iron...then place in the imaginary 82mm strap on boss that I can't find...

Drilling a cast iron soil stack?

Thanks for the prompt reply Chris. Could you tell me more about connecting the WC to the soil stack. ie.. Why doesn't the soil stack collapse when I cut a section out? How do I support the soil stack? lastly, what is the name of the fitting that fits into the section that was cut-out? Thanks Jason
