    Extractor Fan Switching

Thanks, good suggestion, yes you're right some do have a delayed start. Could I maybe try the Silent Tornado - the one that normally takes 10 seconds to fire up - wired through the normal light switch to see if that is a designed in feature? I'm not sure about the AirVent humidistat, but should...

    Extractor Fan Switching

Thanks, I know sorry, I should have bought a simple timer fan, my electrician friend said that humidistats can be more trouble than they're worth, incorrectly triggered etc. He says to just turn the humidistat part down/off? I usually do 'straightforward ' like for like swap installations...

    Extractor Fan Switching

Hello, can someone please help answer a dilemma that I have with switching of bathroom extractor fans via the switches shown below? During a major house extension 25 years ago, the electrician fitted these dual switch Fan & Light units, made and supplied to him through an electrical wholesaler...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Many years of both, there shouldn't be any boundaries, they complement each other and these days you can't easily do one without the other.

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, a good suggestion to incorporate that while doing all this work. One of the first replies to this was to build in access if at all possible, but I couldn't see exactly how at the time I could do that. Access panels in homes are often on vertical walls, unless large floor ones in...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Yes I am one (automotive) not ex! Is that an advantage or a handicap?

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, you're so right I'm sure. What concerned me with this one was that the compression fittings locked away forever, and not behind plasterboard, but a very permanent floor. But I suppose I should take comfort from other installations I can access that have remained trouble-free for...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, and I appreciate your view on this, that's why I like this forum and generally get good advice. But I am at least thinking it through, and asking you guys who do know better, to try and avoid some of the poor work out there - and a leaky floor. Thanks again, much appreciated. I can at...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

There is a very good discussion on this solvent weld trap dilemma here. https://community.screwfix.com/threads/solvent-weld-shower-trap.76530/ And as pointed out there, nobody seems to know of a completely S/W trap that doesn't have at least the final connection as compression, although in the...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, that's true, I'm leaning heavily that way. I will take lots of photos, measure up, draw and keep for reference where everything is. I could even cut a lid in the plywood, screwed and silicone sealed beneath the tiles; a particular tile could then be lifted if ever necessary, they are...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, looks good. But I already had an alternative freebie supplied with the shower tray and put that aside for this McAlpine because it was deemed better by the trade guys. It has a very low, flush grille that doesn't protrude and get trodden on or tripped over. My trap grille is just inside...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

I was thinking just that when I was out for a walk. Aldi had one for £30+ a while ago, Amazon with colour display £40+, just needs a 10mm hole with a discrete cover plug. That gets removed periodically and the scope poked down for a look. Thanks for this.

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

I looked and it has batteries that would need changing periodically and would need to be positioned probably low down on the wall with a wire coming up from the floor. Sounds feasible and the tray idea. Thanks

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

It's already in, it's vinyl Karndean glued down tiles, see in photo. The only unfloored bit is the part you see when the tray is lifted.

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks - Yes, I'd consider that. It would I suppose need to be fitted directly beneath the last elbow joints. I haven't a clue what it looks like. Can you suggest one, where I would get it? Thanks

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, and I agree, I have had similar situations with lots of 'just in case' work, and like you say "six years later, no leaks . .", even 20 years later. But Sod's or Murphy's Law . . . . .!! As much as I want to do this 'properly', there is a lot of work involved finding and sourcing the...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

    >> Maybe that has to be the best solution? To somehow solvent weld or replace the 45deg compression elbow, or to swap for a trap that has solvent weld joints. That could remove the doubt about what was going on under this floor., and the need for an access trap ?? Sorry is PB plasterboard...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks. That's exactly my point. An upstairs bathroom leaky waste will at least show as a mark on the ceiling below, and is easy to open up, replace and redecorate. But in this case, without some inspection access, it could be catastrophic under this void before anything showed, or smelled! But...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks, I agree. Any access will have to be a small floor trap that seals watertight and takes the floor tiling - in this case the floor covering is vinyl Karndean. It would need to be next to the tray, allowing a hand to get in to the joints on the the trap. I have in mind about 150 to 200mm...

Shower Waste joints not accessible ?

Thanks Madrab - I heard similar warnings about using sealants on rubber seals, I get what you're saying. Problem for people like me is that there is so much "oh, it'll be alright mate" comment out there and these 'plumbers' had said to use sealant with rubber seals. So again, would you be ok...
