    Combi Boiler - Performance Question

Hi, to check the performance of a combi boiler you will need both the boiler heat specs and to do a quick flow test. i) What is the rated max. output to water. (in kW). This will be in the documentation. ii) Does it have any hot water storage? If so, the power test will take a little longer...

    Cooker fail

Neon bulbs, however, may last a surprisingly long time. I have some on my boiler that have been lit more or less continuously since 1980 - 330,000 hrs! George

    A museum piece.....but reliable....

Well done, dishman! You're three years ahead of my trusty Worcester Heatslave 2+, a mere youngster at 37 years. Is that a Grundfos Selectric pump you have there? Mine's a Selectric 4, which still runs perfectly. Cheers! George.

help identify this boiler noise please

This sounds like pipework resonance to me, caused by the water pump. There is a lowish frequency there (<100Hz), on top of the 1 second ampitude modulation. But it might also be the fan or combustion noise. Try changing the pressure in the primary system a bit, and also adjust the radiator...

UFH help - ever seen pipe like this?

Hi groubear, You may have old Kee Triple Tube UFH pipe. Have a look at this forum blog, and see if the description corresponds with your setup: http://www.ebuild.co.uk/topic/4371-problems-with-nu-heat-underfloor-heating/page__st__20 It appears there are deterioration issues with this type of...

    Boiler Kettling and Desludge

Tony, Agreed. I did start with the HW circuit and progressed to the rads. There was significant amount of black oxide - 2kg of acid produced a pretty dark green effluent from the circuit but did the job perfectly. I might run 500g through every year or two from now on to keep it clear of...

    Boiler Kettling and Desludge

Thank you, Pete. Yes - I have included the radiators in the flush, although simply by passing citric acid through them. They all seem ok and heat evenly. One observation: the citric acid/iron citrate solution circulating around the system is denser than cold fresh water, so the heated liquid...

    Boiler Kettling and Desludge

My trusty old Worcester Heatslave 2+ started kettling noisily recently. Black oxide probably came off the cast iron boiler sides and deposited at the bottom of the boiler above the burner. The primary circuit was last flushed with acid about 20 years ago, so not surprising some corrosion has...

Unable to add water to system

You might try clearing the apparent blockage in the cold water feed using compressed air. Using a garden sprayer such as a Outdoor Hozelock sprayer, tape around the end of the nozzle with pvc tape. Pump up the tank with air and then apply the nozzle firmly to the water feed outlet at the...

    Boost to old Worcester Boiler

Groovejet, 'Are you saying that you've linked the powerstream upto mains pressure and then connected into your existing hot water pipe???' The Powerstream is on the cold water input side of the boiler, not the hot water o/p side. 'The heatslave is a floor standing combi, has it been...

    Boost to old Worcester Boiler

Thanks for comments! No space for a hot water tank, thus the original installation of a combi. 6 litres/min of water with a 50 degree temp rise - equates to about 10 litres/min of bath hot water, i.e. 20kw heat input. Quite respectable for a continuous hot water supply, even by today's...

    Boost to old Worcester Boiler

My trusty Worcester Heatslave 2+ boiler, now running for 34 years without any serious faults, does have one disadvantage. Its output to water is only 11kw which makes running a bath slow, especially in winter. I had a word with my electrician last year and he suggested heating the cold water...

    A Well Designed Boiler

Well, it's gone wrong again! After 30 years service, my Worcester Heaslave 2+ has suffered its second fault. Came home to find no hot water and no heating. Called my service engineer, who quickly diagnosed a failed Gas Flow Control Valve. Pleasingly some years ago he suggested, because the...

    Boiler Scrappage Scheme

HMG's boiler scrappage scheme, offering £400 discount against the cost of old and inefficient boilers, starts today. Should I be tempted? I have an old (28 years) Worcester Heatslave 2+ boiler, that is highly reliable, and relatively cheap to service. (<£100 p.a.) My gas bill is about...

    Black Oxide Deposits

I posted last year that my Worcester Heatslave 2+ boiler has worked reliably for more than 25 years. It has a cast iron boiler and a primary circuit water header tank, on a system with conventional steel radiators. It occurred to me recently that I have had no build up of black oxide in the...
