    Cracks around window (advice please)

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't too concerned about the diagonal crack. The other 2 pics the crack is behind the blind (stripy material in the pics). I'll try to upload a window wide image... Edited to add: There are no cracks visible on the outside of the wall

    Cracks around window (advice please)

Hi, We've had some substantial work done on our current house in 2013. Part of the included a huge steel across the back of the property and lintels installed above the windows (they hadn't been fitted originally). One of the bedroom windows - above where the huge steel was fitted - has...

    Remove ceiling

I'm certainly no expert but I've done this. Now I tend to err on the side of caution, so first of all I contacted my local authority who offered an asbestos testing service. Thankfully mine came back negative. So I sent about it with a hammer etc, just pulled down the old stuff. Beware...

    Extra insulation to sloped ceiling

Hi all, I'm back for some more advice. Following our recent extension, the Building Regs Officer has found that we don't have enough insulation between our ceiling and the roof felt/tiles. Basically the builder didn't put in any TLX multi-foil (I think), the 70mm celotex is present. Any...

    Clear glass in bathroom window?

Thanks for the advice guys! Good to know. Pretty sure he just screwed up on the ordering. I've got clear glass for a bathroom (part of extension - so not replacement) and obscured glass for a bedroom (that used to be a bathroom)! Now if I can ever actually get to speak to him again...

    Clear glass in bathroom window?

My builder has installed clear glass in the bathroom window he has fitted. He claims he thought thats "what i'd want". I suspect he's screwed up ordering them and is trying to convince me to keep them. Another builder has suggested it's against building regs. Now setting aside the fact I...

    Replacing sewer drains

As part of my extension the builder (& Building Inspector) have concluded that I need the drains replacing. These run across the back of the property - a distance of approx 11m. Any ideas on the cost of replacing these? (I'm just looking for a ballpark figure - from an independent source)...

    Retaining wall options

Thanks for the advice Oldun! I'll crack on with the posts over the weekend. I've already dug the post holes. Initially tried a post hole borer but after about 40cm I hit solid clay and it just threw me across the garden - those things don't half kick! I ended up working with a combination...

    Retaining wall options

Well i've gone down this path. Now I need to get the footings poured. However with access being a problem, round the back of the house with no smooth path to the back garden and a fairly steep access at that. The options I see: 1) Get Ready Mix Delivered. 2) Mix the stuff myself. For...

    Retaining wall options

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with the sleeper option. Sinking verticals as theoldun suggests then securing sleepers side on. Not sure how 'pretty' it'll be but at least I can crack on with the lawn :) Thanks again!

    Retaining wall options

thanks for the reply static. Could you clarify what you mean by engineering blocks? Would this option be likely to be any cheaper to use than sleepers? Having a rethink I guess I can almost half the cost of sleepers by lying them on their side (fixed to part-buried vertical sleepers) rather...

    Retaining wall options

To give you an idea of the situation, it's been in this state for 12months now (no movement- so far!). Rather than pollute this post with all the images, the rest of them are here: //www.diynot.com/network/shiny76/albums/5666 Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can...
