    Cost of warm deck roof

Hi, I really hope someone can help with this. We need to insulate above a bedroom extension which currently has a sound, but uninsulated flat roof. The size of the roof is approx 12sqm and we have been quoted £2350 for a warm deck, which is approximately £196sqm. There is a high 'lip' around...

    Stud wall or Brick wall?

Hi, I am about to block up a set of internal French doors. I was wondering if I should build a stud wall (with appropriate sound-proofing) or a brick/block wall? I would like to know which would be cheaper (but still give appropriate sound-proofing). The two rooms will both have TV's in them...

Replace failed double glazing with single?

But I am looking for a solution that will last pretty much forever, or is there no such thing? Someone has reccomended Pilkington K Glass as the single glazing option?

Replace failed double glazing with single?

Hi, I bought a house with good condition wooden windows, but most of the sealed units had failed. Without wanting to replace the entire windows, and understanding about the problems of double glazing units and wooden frames (too small rebate, no drainage etc) I am wary to just replace the...

How do I insulate my flat roof

Side of house is pebble-dashed, and built so close to neighbouring property I doubt you could even get a ladder up there (always scaffolding I suppose). Would this not stick-out and look odd to rest of side (ie below it)?

How do I insulate my flat roof

The walls do feel cold, and have double glazing at both ends (no draughts, pretty sound), so the walls appear to be double-brick width - certainly at the window ends. So to me they shouldn't be any less insulated than the rest of the house? Floor definately feels cold (carpeted), and walls...

How do I insulate my flat roof

I have a bedroom with was a 1960s extension above an unheated garage. The specs are as follows: 3 external walls (probably single brick but not sure), recently refelted flat roof, and unheated garage below. I want to insulate as it gets very cold, but don't know the best approach. I do not...

    Cement pointing is too grey

Thanks, I will try a few test using different sands, maybe mix in some White cement for a lighter colour? One final question, What is the minimum depth I would need to dig out to relay new pointing, it's for crazy paving so some of the areas to be filled are quite large so I wouldn't want...

    Cement pointing is too grey

Thanks. I now need to decide whether to dig up the top inch and redo with plasterers sand, a lot of work if I don't really have to. As I said, a small patch of earlier pointing is definately changing colour, but I think this was a slightly wetter mix, would this make a difference? If the...

    Cement pointing is too grey

Hi, I have recently patched-in an area on crazy paving in my garden, and think I have used the wrong sand (I was advised to use sharp sand and grey cement). The cement has dried but is pure grey in colour, whereas the existing pointing is a sandier colour. I don't think a dye was used...

    Help with a bumpy lawn

Thanks everyone for your good advice, it will save me a fair bit of money on new turf, I am so glad I didn't dig it all up and then ask the question!

    Help with a bumpy lawn

Thanks, sounds like good advice to me. I think I may hire (or buy?) a garden roller, and try that first. The grass seems particularly lumpy at the moment, but could this be due to the wormcasts slightly freezing due to the cold weather? Or am I wasting my time? (a hard question considering...

    Help with a bumpy lawn

I have a large(ish) lawn that is quite bumpy when you walk on it, although it looks flat from the house, so no major slopes etc. The turf is in good condition, very green and grows well, so rather than the expense/hassle of laying new turf, I had an idea to mechanically dig up the existing...
