    lighting switch confusion...please help!

HA! Coms were the wrong way around! Obviously the old switch was a slightly odd setup on the back and if i'd have had the old switch i'd have been able to see. Moral to that story, keep the old switch safe until the new one works. Thanks a lot chaps! :D

    Cracks in ceiling

Hi Mike, Bit of a problem you've got there, i've not heard of weather causing ceiling ceiling shrinkage/cracks before but it's strange how they've all happened at once and with the turn in the weather. Does it look like they've been repaired previously to get it through the sale? I'd be...

Another bubbling & flaking plaster/paint question!

definitely fill those mortar joints for a start. the inside pics look like rising damp. are the walls cavity or solid 9inch? how would water be ingressing from the passage? Driving rain seem unlikely but do you get pools of water down there if it's wet? You need to firstly find the...

mmmmm hog roast!! :-) not saying he doesn't know his stuff joe, i agree he seems knowledgeable about 'traditional' methods. he seems less knowledgeable about modern methods though and there is sometime and argument for both/either. bit too preechy and i think the main problem is the way...

exactly the problem, he obviously has way more spare time than the rest of us, no idea how he earns a living but it's not on the trowel that's for sure. he has SO MUCH time that it's difficult for the rest of us to compete with him on here, we've all got day jobs and lives outside of that, we...

hopefully he'll be gone for weeks then waiting for the stuff to go off so he can rub it up with his cross grain wooden float. that boys preaching though is ruining this forum for everyone, the mods for some reason don't want to step in and stop this place becoming a ghost town, maybe they...

Repairing gap left by picture rail

perfect job would be to skim the lot yes but i suspect you don't need this amount of work, i'd have the area from the bottom of the picture rail to the ceiling bonded out level and then skimmed and feathered into the existing, or easilfilled.

    Rising damp?

if done properly you should be getting damp on the surface of your walls. adding some kinda admix to plaster to deal with the problem (sounds like what's happened based on your description) is completely inadequate! if you're in a basement you're more than likely below the water table, you...

    brigded dpc puzzle

Hi chaps. Kind of plastering kind of building question so opted for building. Got an old extension with a damp problem to sort. It's currently been rendered down to ground level, has no dpc as it was originally the coal shed or loo. We're going to knock off the old render which will...
