    Small roof window

Oh well. I'll have to have a think about it. Cheers

    Small roof window

I want to fit a roof window over our stairs to let a little more light in. I would much prefer a top hung window so that when it is open you are not looking at the edge of the open window from the landing. I cannot find any roof windows that are top hung which are less than 98cm deep. Does...

    Dormer construction questions.

Another query if I may. Attached is a snippet of the plans. Rafters are specced at tripled C24, 75x125. I have to say I had not noticed the tripled aspect before and it rather messes up with my plans of hiding the extra depth inside the dormer cheeks, as they are only 100mm thick. I could...

    Temporary purlin support.

That was just too obvious I guess  Don't think I will be able to that anyway. I've more measuring to do (there will be 2 or 3 steps up to the new floor level even lowered) but I'm pretty sure the new joists will not go under the current ceiling. Cheers

    Temporary purlin support.

Yes extension rather than just a dormer. It will sit on the outer wall. Building inspector has agreed that a pair of sistered joists sat on front wall replacing the current wallplate can used to hang the joist from, but that will entail removal of the rafters back to the purlin at least...

    Temporary purlin support.

3x2 joists notched over and skew nailed into the 2x1 which is nailed to the wall. Other end are skew nailed on to the front wall plate.

    Temporary purlin support.

I understand that, and have had SE involved. Due to a total lack of interest and or too busy, I have not been able to find a builder and so am doing the work myself. I'm asking for the best way to support the purlin whilst the floor/ceiling is removed, so I don't have the roof potentially...

    Dormer construction questions.

Just in case anyone searches, comes across this thread, and wonders what the answer was Building Inspector says this is an acceptable solution.

    Temporary purlin support.

I'm converting a roof space into a room, PP acquired. Building inspector on board. In order to get the maximum head height I'm planning on dropping the floor as room below can afford to lose a few inches in ceiling height. In the roof space there is a purlin (see picture) spanning 3m approx...

    Dormer construction questions.

Back again with more questions. In order to gain a bit more headroom in these new rooms (currently the floor would be about 320mm above the existing floor level B to C) I'm thinking I could steal a bit of space from the room below which has quite a high ceiling. This would mean rather than...

    Dormer construction questions.

This appears to be the second time he's over specified. I'm getting the impression he arrives at a figure then adds on a bit extra just in case ... Thanks.

    Dormer construction questions.

Dragging this up again, more questions. Being unable to find a builder to do the work, I'm planning on taking it on myself as much as possible. First job is to replace the ceilings in the two downstairs rooms, as they are currently only ceilings on 3x2 timber. The plans show 75x150 C16 joists...

    Post and beam fixing

Just for completeness, oak is now in and the roof is still up, props came out a few weeks ago . Did it all myself in the end. Inspector is happy, so am I.

    Post and beam fixing

Just to provide an answer that might be of use to future 'searchers'. SE says moving post and having a short (300mm) cantilevered end would not be a problem, so that's probably the route I shall take.

    Post and beam fixing

SE is away for a week and I want to get moving, or at the very least have some workable ideas to present to him. Thought I would ask here to save wasting his time with totally unworkable solutions. For instance I could move the post sideways (towards the centre of the beam) and drop down into...

    Sledgehammer and nut?

    Post and beam fixing

Not without doing extensive damage to the ceiling and wall of the room below.

    Post and beam fixing

Just came across spreader plates. Any reason a 15mm (300x200 or so) plate sat on engineering bricks built up around the joist end could not be used? It would be low enough profile to be at floor level.

    Post and beam fixing

Thanks, but it's on the first floor, so unless I build a pillar in the living room that's not an option ;)

    Post and beam fixing

I'm removing a wall and replacing with an oak post and beam. First floor, directly supporting half a dozen rafters. Post and beam sizes checked by SE. His advice for fixing the bottom of the post was to take down a couple of courses of brickwork (rat trap bond, internal wall that was external in...
