    Hot water shenanigans

    Cheers. That's good info.

    Hot water shenanigans

It's an old metal cold water cistern with no insulation, but it's never been a problem before. I think it's just a case of too much hot water being produced.

    Hot water shenanigans

Just looked at one online and I think you're right, it looks like a Willis external immersion. Apparently NIE (Northern Ireland Electric) have timed control of the immersion because it's on Economy 7, and they're activating it for about six hours each day, which seems an awful lot considering...

    Hot water shenanigans

I suppose if too much hot water is being produced the pressure in the HWST could force it back from where it came, but I assumed the immersion heater would have some sort of non-return valve to prevent this.

    Hot water shenanigans

Yeah, the system has a separate small water heater next to the hot water storage tank. As far as I can tell, this heater (perhaps immersion is the wrong name for it) is on a timer to come on twice a day and sends the heated water to the tank. I just tried the cold bathroom tap a moment ago and...

    Hot water shenanigans

Ok folks, need some advice here. My father-in-law has a cold water storage tank in the attic which feeds the cold bathroom taps - the kitchen cold is direct from the mains. There is no traditional boiler - combi or otherwise - as hot water comes from a timed immersion heater in the ground floor...

    Thought so. Many thanks.

    Shower pressure

What's the best way to determine if my shower's cold water is coming direct from the mains? We have a gravity-fed system with a cold water storage tank in the attic, but I'm not 100% sure it supplys the shower.

    Shower mixer query

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to get a shower mixer for a gravity fed system that can cope with high cold water pressure and low hot water pressure? I think my cold inlet for the shower comes direct from the mains.

    Digital shower query

Cheers. I have a sneaky suspicion my cold water to the shower may be coming direct from the mains rather than the cold water storage tank. I'll check that tomorrow. If I decide to stick with a mixer are there specific types that can cope with high cold water pressure and low hot water pressure?

Does that mean similar pressures are required?

    Digital shower query

I'm refurbing my bathroom and would like to install a digital shower, but I'm not sure if my plumbing is suitable as it currently stands. It's a gravity fed, vented system with the expected high cold water pressure and low hot water pressure. I watched a professional plumber install a Mira...

    Cold water storage tank issue.

Yes, I'm pretty sure there is. I'll give that a go. Many thanks.

    Cold water storage tank issue.

Kitchen has a mixer tap. Is there an easy way to check which is most likely to be the problem?

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

    Cold water storage tank issue.

Hi Madrab. The flow of water back into the CWST stops when the mains are off. Not sure about access to the shower feeds. I can remove the existing mixer in order to replace it, but the pipes that feed it are inaccessible. The attached pic is style of mixer fitted.

    Cold water storage tank issue.

That's the case. Just realised there's also no expansion tank. Assuming it's faulty shower shower controls, what type should I be replacing with when there's a big difference between hot and cold pressure?

    Cold water storage tank issue.

Hmmm! Not sure. If I turn the water off at the mains I get nothing from the upstairs cold bathroom taps, which suggests to me the cold is coming directly from the mains. Does that sound right? The cold water pressure is definitely much higher than the hot water pressure.

    Cold water storage tank issue.

Hello all. I have a gravity fed system and my cold water storage tank started overfilling yesterday. I replaced the ballcock valve just in case it was a simple fix, but no joy. When I looked at the water outlet I could see the ripple of warm water being pushed back up into the tank, which leads...

    Patio, get a builder in?

Hi all. I was hoping to lay a patio before December but, with the hardcore down and the pavers bought, my back has had enough. As a rough guide can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay if I get someone in to lay a 16² metre area? Cheers - N
