Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Thanks Bernard. I don't suppose that you could list a quick " Bill Of Materials " for the bits that you used, particularly the transformer ? I like the idea of the trace heating being lower voltage if it is inside the drain pipe. You should manufacture and market them on eBay or Amazon - I...

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Bernard should make and market it ! - I would certainly buy one.

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

I do Ian - Until the outside (black) condensate drain freezes up downstream and blocks. Then the drain progressively fills with condensate which freezes. Once the black pipe is full of ice up to the level of the white pipe then the white pipe becomes blocked by ice and the water builds up and...

You should manufacture and market this Bernard. I would buy it.

    Freezing Condensate.

Exactly the problem I have - See other thread. I had no problem if it freezes overnight. But if it stays mainly sub-zero for several days the drain pipe, although properly sized, will freeze and block. Insulation only slows down the process - If it stays sub-zero for long enough, inside the...

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Thanks for your reply. Not without great difficulty unfortunately. The boiler is in my kitchen but the drain pipes for the sink are a long way away with built-in fridge, cooker etc all blocking the route.

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Thanks for your reply Ian. No. The white pipe does not freeze until the water has backed right up in the black pipe. Since I left the gap it has still been sub-zero for several days and the white pipe does not freeze.

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Thanks for your reply. Yes - The run to the drain is just too long. Even though it's quite large bore it's still freezing up if it stays sub-zero for several days as has just happened again recently. I never thought of putting trace heating inside the pipe, I thought that I would have to strap...

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

Thanks for your reply. The first pipe is glued (solder welded ) but there is a nozzle (at the end of the flexible pipe from the boiler) that is a push fit into the start of the pipe. I pulled this out to drain the water while I got the pipe outside unblocked, but I would be worried about...

Boiler condensate pipe freezes in prolonged cold weather

I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice : I have a Worcester condensing boiler. As fitted the boiler had a several meter long small bore condensate pipe leading to the nearest drain. This would always block up when the weather was sub-zero outside, so I had a much bigger drain line...

    best way to clear moss?

I would think it is more to do with how the surface texture of the roof tiles allows a coating of gunge to form / bind on which the moss can grow.

    Wet vs Dry Ridge

Agree with all the above. But in my area at least Building Control insist on dry ridge construction for new roof construction, or even new extensions to existing roofing. If you are replacing an existing wet ridge then they will accept " like for like " replacement.

    Insulating conservatory roof

I have a double glazed glass roof on my conservatory. I really can't see the point of having a conservatory if you're going to have a non-transparent roof. I like sitting in there in the evenings looking at the stars while having a relaxing drink. Sure it gets a but chilly in there in the...

    Everlite polycarbonate sheets

I'm with MW roofline - Throw those sheets in a skip. It's never a good idea to plan a project based on the materials that you just happen to have available. The project will invariably end up as unsightly and non functional bodge job. Design the project properly first and then plan the...
