    POE lighting

Losses are going to be worse for sure, but Cisco are saying: I have no idea where they think the power is going to come from. Cable losses will be higher too as lower volts has to mean higher amps, and it’s a thinner cable Brian

    POE lighting

Is anyone using or installing POE lighting? https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/enterprise-networks/what-is-poe-lighting.html Looks interesting for commercial, and probably domestic eventually. Installations could look very different in a few years Brian

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

Thanks all for the responses so far, it's good to see so many good ideas I think we have: trojanhaws - Second fill valve in the cistern - I like this idea because it is in effect a timer so that you would always get x seconds of water from the hot pipe Harry Bloomfield - PIR to start the hot...

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

I was going to try: https://www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-pipe-thermostat/2395r but it might take too long to sense the temperature and switch, then there's the delay in the motorised valve... Under the sink, yes I reckon I could get a new pipe to the cistern and join it to the existing pipe by...

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

That's a good idea, thanks Daveydub Yes, none of these ideas are perfect, and the valve temperature would never match the pipework temperature exactly, but if I can get 90% of the performance of a pumped loop for 10% of the cost, I call that a win - actually if I can 75% for 25%, I'd still be...

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

No, it appears to be glued - was in when my wife bought the place. Looks nice, but can’t get to anything. Certainly don’t want to risk breaking it If I could, I would try your idea, but I think I’ll have to try a thermal switch and valve unless we get any better ideas Thanks, Brian

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

Hi Harry, the point of this is to achieve the same without a circulation pump or loop It assumes that you would use the toilet before the sink, and use the cold water in the hot pipe to fill the toilet. Hot water would then be available instantly at the hot tap - hopefully  Brian

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

Yes, just checked and the flow is restricted to the tap - it was splashing too much so I turned it down I’m not sure that the valve would need to know as it could be like the diverter on central heating, and switch over when hot and back when cold. Downside to that is it could retain heat and...

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

Thanks trojanhawrs, I think it could work. I thought of a temperature switch under the sink to switch a valve between the hot and cold pipes Quick tests: From flush to full 50 seconds From tap open to hot 40 seconds - sink 3/4 full - probably less than a full cistern From standing to sink 10...

Rusty particles in hot water tap

Are all the taps the same brand? Auntie had this on one sink and it was something inside the tap that had started to rust - I think it was a nut Dug up the road and replaced the mains water pipe before we found it Brian

    Pumped hot water loop alternative

Our bathroom is a long way from the megaflow tank and it takes a while for the water to run hot at the tap. No problem for filling the bath, but would be nice to have warm water available immediately at the sink Is there a way to fit a valve under the sink piped to the toilet fill so that it...

What is the point of the smart meter monitor?

Found ours to be useful for checking base load, but that’s about it. Got a new TV and found it didn’t go to standby properly and was using 30W instead of 0.5W on standby. Changed the settings and fixed it Brian

    Additional storage heater advice

Hi everyone, I have storage heaters from the 90s and they work OK, but I don't think they are optimally positioned I have a flat with bay window - lounge through to dining room - kitchen, and a storage heater in the dining room The living room tends to be cool, especially near the bay window. I...

    Economy 7 and Storage Heaters

A distinction needs to be made between snake oil “storage heaters” like those made by a company beginning with F which do not use cheap overnight electricity, and modern High Heat Retention storage heaters which do use cheap overnight electricity.

Are there any thermostats with a good range of user adjustable hysteresis?

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. The neutral connection to the thermostat is for that heater. If your thermostat has a neutral connection and you want more hysteresis, disconnect it from the thermostat. Might be too much or too little, but easy to try Brian Edit: Sorry, hadn’t spotted that...

    Economy 7 and Storage Heaters

Lot 20 storage heaters would be a good option if you are looking to spend that kind of money. Like these: https://www.dimplex.co.uk/quantum It depends on how old your current ones are and how bad they are. Ours are from the 90s, and we only really get temperature swings when it’s below 5°C...
