    Ceiling light wires

Wouldn't a disconnected neutral wire show up as being live anyway?

    Redundant smoke alarms

I was looking at some old plastic MK consumer units I fitted getting on for 20 years ago (it seems like only yesterday) and marvelling at how discoloured and shabby the look now.

    Redundant smoke alarms

Probably due to no smokers perhaps - have sometimes just tried to change the head, but the yellow bases looked so awful I couldn't leave it like that.

    Redundant smoke alarms

If you've ever had a terminal screw that doesn't tighten, or you've broken one by accident...

    Redundant smoke alarms

The old bases always go yellow - you can always tell if you don't change the bases.

    Redundant smoke alarms

Which rooms have the battery only rf detectors? Has a bungalow extension been added recently? Trying to figure out why the mains ones have become redundant - especially because it's usually easy to add more mains detectors in a bungalow.

    Ceiling light wires

Is this just not conventional conduit wiring, with a neutral in, and neutral out, and a switched live? Can you see another continuous red wire simply running from one conduit to another conduit in the round circular ceiling box?

Adding a second socket to a room off of another socket.. Is it really this 'easy'?

That's a hell of a lot damage. Being a dot and dab wall, a lot of the cable could have been fished behind the board, and chased only where a dot is. Still, not my problem.

Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

I don't see any need to label unused cores that have been terminated in connector blocks. If there is only one wire in the connector block, it's fairly obvious it's spare - or at least, 'not doing anything'.

Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

Personally, I put unused cores into a connector block or wago at each end. I prefer not to connect them to the earth terminal. Reason being, I don't feel it's technically correct to connect unused wires to used wires. We see it on this forum - a core connected to the earths - all of a sudden...

    Garage supply

You would be more likely to use a smaller MCB, but can still use the larger cable. What kind of things are you intending to run in the garage? It would be a better design to fit a standalone switch fuse unit in the house, done by splitting the tails with a Henley or ISCO block, assuming the...

You can really only go by the spots manufacturers instructions, these normally include minimum measurements.

    Cabling irregular shaped ceiling

The CORRECT way would be to use the joist formula on every joist, regardless of how their lengths differ.

    Fuse socket

Probably on a 6amp lighting circuit - but won't do any harm plugging an air freshener into it. Don't let anyone start plugging heaters or portable welders into it. There is an outgoing cable as well as an incoming cable. If you are certain the switched fused connection unit doesn't serve...

Paint is peeling - HELP needed please!

Bare plaster has to be sealed with a mist coat to prevent paint from bubbling up. PVA splashes, typically found on new plaster, can cause paint to bubble up. Is it original plaster, or the original 1900s plaster? How 'old' did the old paint that you painted over look? Have your walls been...

Replacing an old wired smoke detector for a new one.

Why do we need to know how many detectors are there?
