Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

Thanks for that - I'll check it out.

Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

Thanks Andy. They're not always the most attractive of bulbs for a table lamp. But there may be one which will work, and look OK. Good suggestion though, David

Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

Thanks to all. Non plug-in is a lot more difficult for simple table lamps. Looks like a Timer PLUS Light sensitive switch maybe the only answer (thanks pj). I still find it surprising nobody does something quite like I want - it seems a pretty standard security option - the odd lamp or...

Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

I have a couple of lamps in the house on which I use a plug-in timer to turn on around dusk and off at (say) 11.30pm, but of course I have to regularly change the ON time as the time of dusk changes - quite frequently this time of year. Presumably, this is not that unusual. Does anyone...

    63mm Rainwater downpipes?

That's an interesting suggestion - I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try... Thanks very much.

    63mm Rainwater downpipes?

Thanks for the replies. Those connectors might do the job, though as you say, they won't look that pretty! The reason why it needs cutting is that it's cemented in at the bottom. So, short of breaking up the front doorstep, I think it needs to be cut.

    63mm Rainwater downpipes?

Thanks for the suggestions - but the problem is they're plastic fittings!

    63mm Rainwater downpipes?

I need to cut into an existing rainwater downpipe to unblock it. So I'll need a couple of connectors to refit the missing section afterwards. Unfortunately, it's 63mm pipe and everywhere seems to only stock 68mm fittings these days. Does anyone know where I can get 63mm fittings, or have...

    Glueing hinges to mirror door

Mmm... possibly. Not convinced the double-sided pads would be strong enough. Maybe I'll check with the mirror supplier again!

    Glueing hinges to mirror door

Thanks. Cabinet was professionally fitted so is sealed to wall and has built in shaver point. Could replace, but not easy to find right size, etc, etc! The mirror supplier didn't seem to know about adhesives, hence my post!

    Glueing hinges to mirror door

Firstly, not sure which section this should be in, so please move if wrong. I need to replace the door on a bathroom cabinet as the previous one fell off and smashed on the bathroom floor (dramatic!). It is simply a piece of mirror with polished edges, overlaying the cabinet sides. A...

    drilling through metal lintel

OK, well I gave it one more shot, and plenty of oomph! And still got nowhere! I guess we'll never know quite why it was such a problem. So, I cut my losses and went for the wooden batten option - and now all is fine. I have a very fine blind and my wife off my back! Thanks for all the...

    drilling through metal lintel

OK, thanks for that - I'd never heard of them before! As everyone seems incredulous that I can't get through with an ordinary HSS bit, I'll try once more in a couple of other positions. If that doesn't work, I think I'll go for the wooden batten option.

    drilling through metal lintel

Thanks for your thoughts - I do appreciate the comments - even if they don't seem to be taking me much further forward at the moment! I'm certainly not an expert at drilling metal, but I have done it before occasionally. I have been able to press up with my foot on the window sill, so have...

    drilling through metal lintel

From what you've said, it does seem very weird. I asked a drill supplier yesterday for their recommendation and they suggested buying a 'cobalt' bit from them. Ever come across those? If it's got a reasonable chance of working, I don't mind splashing out for it - but don't want to if...

    drilling through metal lintel

I can see you're sceptical, but it definitely is metal. I've already tried 3 different positions with exactly the same result!

    drilling through metal lintel

Well that seems strange then. It's definitely metal - I've shone a torch into the hole and it has a shiny silvery metallic look. And I bought a couple of new bits specially, so they should obviously have been sharp - at least when I started! I'm beginning to think I'll have to try and...

    drilling through metal lintel

Thanks for the reply. I think you're suggesting a 3mm pilot hole before using the suggested dry walling screws. But I'm not having much luck drilling the pilot hole! I've broken one bit and made little progress with a second. And they were/are good quality HSS bits in theory. So the...

    drilling through metal lintel

Sorry to re-open this thread yet again. I too am trying to fit a blind above a window. Behind the first layer of plaster is metal - I presume a metal lintel. Having read this thread, I tried using a small good quality HSS bit as a pilot for an intended larger bit. But I'm making...
