12mm ply or 6mm hardi backed boerds??

I've just done a kitchen floor. It was my first attempt at tiling and I got some good advice on here. Hopefully i can pass on some of the tips I got. I started with 12mm ply (after reading the "tiling basics" post) but everyone said 12mm wouldn't do and you really need 18mm screwed down every...

Floor tiling - coping with size variation

Thanks. All seems to be working OK. I'm using the 5mm spacers most places, but occasionally turn them sideways for a slightly smaller gap where needed. I'm using a straight edge and a bit of judgment as to what looks right. I was expecting all to be exact rather than a bit of an art to...

Floor tiling - coping with size variation

I'm just about to lay some porcelain floor tiles. Thanks to lots of help on here I think I've finally got the preparation right, so I've just started dry laying the tiles to check the cut tile sizes, etc. It's only now I realise just how much tiles can vary in size! I've got a mix of...

    I don’t Excel at tiling

I'm not sure exactly what you're going to do once you've got your grid of squares. How is Excel going to help then? Buy a pad of graph paper. WH Smiths do them. I found it helpful planning tiles for my very complicated multi-room layout. That way you can sketch options until you're happy...

    Newbie floor tiling question

You're posting late on a Saturday night, tictic. Not dispensing drunken DIY advice after a few beers I hope. My setup is 22mm floorboards in the hallway, toilet and kitchen. There's 18mm ply in the more recently built conservatory. The 16mm veneered I mentioned was wooden flooring...

    Newbie floor tiling question

Thanks again, guys. You're not telling me what I wan't to hear, but best I hear it before I screw up. :( I'm just wondering why the advice I'm getting now differs from the sticky that I've based my assumptions on: As you can see, I was intending to follow the overboarding rather than...

    Newbie floor tiling question

Thanks for all the advice. Ripping up and replacing the floorboards really isn't an option - or at least it's beyond what I'm prepared to do myself. Like I said, at the moment it's 22mm floorboards (with joist spacing of 19cm) for the hallway, kitchen and downstairs toilet and 18mm ply...

    Newbie floor tiling question

Sounds like I've got the right adhesive (BAL Singlepart Flexible) and sealant (BAL Bond SBR) thanks to the sticky and searching. I already guessed I'd be too slow for rapid adhesive.

    Newbie floor tiling question

Thanks guys. Your tips seem to have filled the gaps. That Ditra stuff look interesting. I'd go for it if I could use it directly over the current floor - 22mm floorboards for most then 18mm ply for the newer conservatory. However if I have to do the 12mm WBP ply and then the Ditra too... then...

    Newbie floor tiling question

Hi. Ive been browsing for a bit and found lots of very helpful stuff on this forum. Thanks already! Being more enthusiastic than experienced or skilled, I've got a couple of newbie question on floor tiling. My project: I'm putting down some expensive 12mm think porcelain floor tiles in one...
