Just picked up the terminal block and have wired the earth into each switch. Thank you so much for your help. What an incredibly useful site this is! :D

S/steel switch front plate with internal plastic box...

Thanks for the reply Qedelec, just have some (probably stupid) questions to clarify... So the earth wire needs to be covered in yellow/green plastic? Is this simply a "freestanding" little metal block like the ones in the metal backboxes?

S/steel switch front plate with internal plastic box...

We are changing the front plates of the light switches to brushed s/steel. Most of the switch front plates in the house attach to a metal box in the wall (as normal). In these cases it is clear where to attach the earth wire to terminal in front plate and terminal in the back of box...

New lights fitted...now other lights don't work!

Just realised that I never thanked people for their responses. Once the multimeter arrived, & we worked out how to use it, we managed to identify the switch wires in the ceiling roses and now they are all marked with red tape! Amazing how much quicker a job is with the right equipment...!! :)

New lights fitted...now other lights don't work!

Thanks for all the help guys. I decided not to wait for the multimeter to arrive and picked up another one today so we will be trying again this evening. I have an electrician coming on Thursday anyway to fit a bathroom cabinet with internal light since I think that the Part B legislation...

New lights fitted...now other lights don't work!

Yeah, that's what I wondered. We don't have one at the moment so I've got one on order from screwfix but have just heard that they've got delivery problems so I won't get it until wednesday... ho hum... do you have any ideas that I could be going on with?

New lights fitted...now other lights don't work!

I should also mention that I have already looked through the "For Reference" sticky without any success and spent about 3 hours combing the posts on this and several other sites! :( Any ideas would be really helpful... I just don't understand where we've screwed up!

New lights fitted...now other lights don't work!

My husband and I installed a couple of light fittings in place of old pendant lights yesterday. We've been able to fit lights successfully on previous occasions but ran into some problems last night. Basically, both lights work fine but appear to have created some problems with other lights...

    Potterton Suprima 100 won't start!

I can't hear a fan or pump so I guess that means that it's not working?

    Walls too hard to drill

The walls are covered in plaster so we haven't been able to work out what they're made of. However, certain areas seem to be much harder than others. The first drill burnt out but the current drill is a Draper Expert SDS + Rotary Hammer Drill, 500 W, 0-950 rpm and we've tried a masonry...

    Walls too hard to drill

We're trying to put in a new kitchen but we are finding it impossible to drill into the walls more that 1/2 inch - despite using a masonry drill bit and the hammer setting on the drill. One masonry bit is completely bent and we've already burnt out one drill! The building is Victorian. Does...

    Potterton Suprima 100 won't start!

It's about 2 years old. I'm not sure if the fan is running. However, if I should be able to hear it, then it's not! Ditto with the pump. We don't use the boiler for hot water.

    Potterton Suprima 100 won't start!

I've just tried to use the central heating system for the first time since last winter but without any success. The current state of the boiler is as follows: The electricity supply is switched on. The external timer is on. The room thermostat is on a high temp setting. The boiler...
