    Upvc French doors fitting

I picked up a set of French doors from marketplace to fit in my home build shed. I had to reduce the height so I cut down and removed the top fixed window section. I fitted the doors last weekend and they need some adjustment as they will only close if both doors are closed together. If I close...

    Reduce door size

Yes, can see the ends of the tenons at the top middle and bottom. From above it looks like a rebate? 4th photo The moulding has been nailed in. As the new door is to hold 2 glass top panels the moulding is loose, so was going to remove them before I take the door to be cut down. I have been...

    Reduce door size

Yes it is solid. Yep would drive me scatty if I knocked 3 inches off each side! I wonder if once cut down I would be able to reuse the mortise if I carefully drill/chisel out the old tenon?

    Reduce door size

I have LPD pitch pine doors in my house and I need an extra one for a new room. They are discontinued but I managed to find one on eBay. The only issue it’s 30 inch wide and I need 24inch. I am thinking of taking it to a local timber/carpenter to have them cut through the rails so I can then...

    Guttering from the 1890’s

Thanks. The cottage is not fancy enough for stone and granite is the local rock here. Maybe wooden? Would the lead just be called a gutter apron? When a new fascia and gutter is fitted and then the lead is lapped back into the gutter? I am looking to do the replacement myself. Just like to have...

    Guttering from the 1890’s

I had an extension in 2008/9 so the front roof was replaced when it was not originally going to be done or in the price for the works. The talk of gutters was not discussed at the time but the project was going over budget!

    Guttering from the 1890’s

I guess this is how they did things in the 1890’s! No it would have not be a stone gutter it’s a simple cottage. The neighbour who is a mirror image of mine had his gutters changed about 13 years ago. The other side is a different cottage with new gutters. Here are another couple of photos

    Guttering from the 1890’s

I have guttering at the front of my terraced cottage that I believe is lead and needs replacing. It has this strange lead piece that comes from under the slate and hangs into the gutter. Is this called a gutter apron? I would like to do some reading up on what is required to replace the fascia...

    Penetrating damp?

I had to google nib wall and I don’t believe this is a nib wall. The wall is 20 thick in places and where the windows are it’s about 8 inches. The chimney is not on this wall and never has been, this is a normal building style for the Guernsey cottages we have here. As it’s Christmas I won’t...

    Penetrating damp?

Thanks The floor was replaced as I wanted a wooden floor fitted and when the carpet was lifted we noticed the front wall where the windows and where this issue is, the joists were bouncing. After looking, the joists were just on slate and they had rotted at that end. The outside level is lower...

    Penetrating damp?

Thanks. This is the wall between 2 windows there has never been a chimney breast on this wall. The chimney is on the other wall which has a stove fitted. It is only this portion of the wall that’s has an issue. There is no damp on the window reveals. Yes, the floor did have the DPM fitted and...

    Penetrating damp?

Thanks. Yes, there was 2 layers to the plastering or maybe 3? I can remember that it was a greyish colour and then the pink plaster.

    Penetrating damp?

I have a 140year old solid granite wall, rendered on the outside with no damp proof course. The floor joists were removed and the whole room was taken back to bare granite and brick 5 years ago. A new solid concrete/insulation floor was installed. I do not use this room very much and have the...

    Hotpoint WDL520 issue

I have the above washer dryer and it will be 10 years old soon. Trying to wash and it seems that it doesn’t want to fill and all the bottom lights are flashing. I have to turn it off at the wall. Will it be an easy fix or has it come to the end of its life?
