    Collective Wisdom re Bonding

Sorry no meter at the moment, and I'm not at home so photo is from my wife. THe copper pipe (and the lead pipe disappearing into the plaster is the current internal gas pipe(s). The bonding cable is connected to the first few centimeters of the internal pipework , before the first branch. I...

    Collective Wisdom re Bonding

Wales n West are in the process of renewing our gas main from metal (?steel) to lovely yellow plastic. The previous system was bonded to the MET from immediately after the meter. Should the original metal pipe, that now acts as a conduit for the new plastic main, be bonded where it enters, or...

Klima ufh mat - am I being stupid here?

As a practising Gas Man, or anaesthetist if you like, a couple of comments. Cyclopropane was widely used up to 25 to 30 years ago, and the floors were indeed antistatic , as was footware, stools chairs breathing tubes etc, its why all the rubber tubing you see in old films is black (graphite...

For Westie or other knowledgeable people re ?11kv substation

Westie - in relation to the Earth Mat. I am unsure of the age of the substation. My sons property is late 20's early 30's with what appears to me lead DNO feed. The houses behind are probably late40's early 50's - I think a post war council estate. I am therefore unclear of the original...

For Westie or other knowledgeable people re ?11kv substation

My son has an urban substation almost abutting onto a back corner of his property. He is looking into purchasing the otherwise fallow ground at the rear of his garden that would then butt up against the substation fence. Presumably there are DNO earth rods associated with the substation...

    Outside Wiring

Whilst BAS's replies may be perceived as being huniliating, there is great deal of sense and safety in what he says. In this instance we know nothing about the exact situation of the OP. Where is the power coming from, what are it protective devices, are they suitable for the cable etc. etc...

    redring electric shower stopped working

On close examination I think your right. The Line certainly looks single core not multi-core. If my memory serves me right that makers it most likely to be 2.5 - though I've not used 4mm much recently so memory may be playing tricks.

    Pump Conundrum

Inverters are never 100% efficient, it may be as bad as 60%,or up to 90% depending on quality etc. Assuming 80% efficiency gives a current draw of around 5.2 amps. For a 75 Amphour battery that gives a theoretical run time of about 15 hours, but no leisure batteries will manage this in my...

    Cloakroom Power

That looks similar to what I've already got. Filtered face plate from standard master socket with the house phones run from the filtered side and an external standard phone cable to the office where there's a separate splitter for phone and adsl. I thought, perhaps wrongly from what...

    Cloakroom Power

Many thanks for the comments so far. From my point of view the understairs is almost the worst place - especially as both my printers and both the desktops have to be wired. If the modem ends up having to be in the loo, can you get UV stable Cat5E cable as running it indoors would not go...

    Cloakroom Power

Looking to "upgrade" my internet access by moving to fibre - BT Infinity or similar, not Virgin. Currnetly my BT Mastersocket is in a cloakroom under the stairs. THe Cloakroom has a loo and small wash-hand basin. As I understand it having BT fibre means a new BT faceplate and modem router...

    House Rewire

Just got back from my mother-in-laws where I have discovered that they have just had the house rewired. They live in the Welsh Valleys and are both in their 80's. I believe thats this was done by/for the local council and has been funded by a Grant - the house is owner-occupied, not rented...

HELP What to do with this shower??

Not investigated the cable path, but the cable enters the isolator through the ceiling from the loft where there is certainly some insulation from what I remember about 100mm. I didnt ask whether the cable is on top of or underneath directly on the plasterboard ceiling and I cant recall from...

HELP What to do with this shower??

Thanks for the prompt reply. At the moment other than investigating on my way home form work (only just got in) we have done nothing. After all not even "sheds" are open at this time of day!! My son is planning to text the landlords to get "approval" for the work which will include the...

HELP What to do with this shower??

My son, who currently rents his house, asked me to come and inspect his instantaneous electric shower as it has recently started to smell "fishy". He had looked at the shower which seems to be OK and the main ceiling isolator. This is the source of the smell. The last 3 cms of the "live"...

    wiring regs

As very much an amateur I will, of course, bow to the professionals. BUT ..... In some circumstances it is very appropriate to use "flex" for fixed wiring. Certainly I have "never" seen cable used in Touring Caravans.
